Interesting, and thanks. Yeah, we're shy, so feel free to update based on this information, which is what I sent the most recent person who asked us about Shinro:

Shinro puzzles weren't invented by us--we saw them in a Japanese puzzle magazine many years ago, and borrowed the idea for Southwest Airlines' Spirit magazine when we started doing their puzzles in 2007. We came up with the name Shinro, and don't know what the original name was. (This isn't the first time we've been asked this question, and I spent a lot of time trying to figure it out in the past.) The English translations of the names of these types of Japanese puzzles tend to be very generic, so the puzzles were probably called "Pointers" or "DIrections" or some such straightforward title. We've run a number of different Japanese-style puzzles in Spirit, and renamed them all in the same fashion. Shinro is without a doubt the most popular and has generated the most mail and the most copying. (I should add to this: We always say on our Shinro pages "Shinro is Japanese for compass bearing.")

Also--Shinro isn't a game, it's a puzzle. We usually make the distinction that a puzzle is solved, giving you one correct solution, while a game is played with different possible conclusions. If I were doing this article, I'd simply take out all the "game" references, especially the word "board." John Rotenstein (talk) 09:49, 22 October 2009 (UTC)
