Fair use rationale for Image:CTRShield.jpg[edit]

Image:CTRShield.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Crosses[edit]

Recent scholarship has examined historical Mormon use of the cross. See: http://www.mormontimes.com/studies_doctrine/doctrine_discussion/?id=10632 Rich jj (talk) 01:19, 14 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

New list[edit]

Many of these new items where historically significant (sunstone, eye of providence), but are not commonly used/discussed all that much in the modern church (i.e. since the presidency of David O. McKay). Should there be two lists: one with the historic symbols & one with the symbols still in common modern use? There are also several symbols used for the LDS Church that are not mentioned, such as the Salt Lake Temple, the Salt Lake Tabernacle, the MoTab, CTR rings, the Christus, etc... -- 208.81.184.4 (talk) 01:52, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

What about wheat sheaves? They are a common motif for the Relief Society, both in the building near temple square, as well as the earlier separate RS halls & granaries. It is also found on the organization's logo. -- 208.81.184.4 (talk) 21:46, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The Official Symbol of the Church[edit]

This is a draft of a new section detailing the new symbol of the Church (April 2020). Please review before uploading to the official page. In addition to the information in this section, I propose we solicit the Church for permission to post their new symbol as the new main picture for this article. Can anyone get on that?

Outline:

  1. Though symbolism is a deep part of their faith, prior to April 2020, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had no official symbol to represent the Church as a whole.
  2. Early converts to the faith from other Christian churches often maintained the symbol of the cross to represent their faith (source).
  3. In __[date]__, due to a comment made by __[President McKay??]__, the Church began to discontinue the use of crosses to symbolize their faith (source). Later, leaders would rationalize this decision by declaring that they worship the <<living Christ, not Christ on the cross>> (multiple sources--<<>> indicates where a quote might fit into this paragraph). Church publications, buildings, media, and their missionaries' name tags were inscribed simply with the name of the Church, with Jesus Christ in slightly bigger font.
  4. In an interview on Sixty Minutes, then President Gordon B. Hinkley remarked on the lack of an official symbol of the Church by saying <<>> (source, 60 Minutes, essentially he said the lives of the members is the symbol of our Church--i.e. how we are recognized throughout the world).
  5. On April 4, 2020, current President of the Church, Russell M. Nelson, announced the design of a new symbol for the Church (source, https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/article/new-symbol-church-of-jesus-christ)
  6. A description of the symbol and its meaning, including its relevance to the recent push to focus on the real name of the Church.

Will do some research and return to update this.
