Linkages[edit]

Some of the Jewish Encyclopedia stuff has already been incorporated into the History of the Jews in Iraq. I also added information to Fallujah and Sura (town) on the subject. Perhaps we should make this the main article on the academies by making sure it does not duplicate the History article?

Locations[edit]

The Pumbedita page mentiones that it's near modern day Fallujah. I don't know where Sura or Nehardea are, but there are enough clues (Nehardea was near the Euphrates river), that someone who knew the geography of the region could give an approximate area. --Bachrach44 01:44, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why start in 550?[edit]

Surely the scope of this article should start with Abba Arika in 219 CE. In the wiki article on him it is written "In the annals of the Babylonian schools the year of his arrival is recorded as the starting-point in the chronology of the Talmudic age." Start Date[edit]

I've never seen the movement of the Jewish community to Babylonia connected to the subsequent Sasanian revolution. While its intriguing to connect the two events, they have no relation that I've found.

No footnotes tag[edit]

I'm guessing this otherwise very helpful article is missing inline citations because the text largely comes from the Jewish Encyclopedia. Still, it would be even more helpful to put in at least paragraph-level tags for verifiability (WP:VERIFY). Msubotin (talk) 05:22, 19 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Rav Ashi didn't live in 550[edit]

This statement is misleading because Rav Ashi lived in the 4th century. It appears to be simplifying the development of the talmud: "The key work of these academies was the compilation of the Babylonian Talmud, started by Rav Ashi and Ravina, two leaders of the Babylonian Jewish community, around the year 550."

It should probably say something like "Rav Ashi was the first of the Amora, and began the compilation of the Talmud. It was completed in the 6th century." 70.109.185.7 (talk) 13:19, 28 September 2018 (UTC) John Dee[reply]

Source?[edit]

What is the source of the long paragraph introduced by "The description given in the following condensed rendering furnishes, at all events, a curious picture of the whole institution and of the inner life and organization of the Babylonian academies" and starting "In the kallah-months . . . "? The phrase "condensed rendering" suggests that this is not a quotation from a published source by someone's version written for this article.
