War time crimes and genocide of the ethnic Tamil community in Sri Lanka

The 2009 the world looked on helplessly as the political climate steadily worsened deepening the crisis in Sri Lanka as it continued to unfold before the eyes of the world, with even more disturbing daily reports of large scale abuse of terrorizing the ethnic Tamil community who face untold misery and hardship that took Sri Lanka back to anarchy and despotism, yet the surrounding countries did not say a word, especially the government of India who trained and provided military hardware to the Sri Lankan armed forces. Was this because of the late Rajiv Gandhi, the former India’s former Prime Minister was assassinated by a alleged Tamil Tiger suicide bomber for his role in despatching the Indian army to Sri Lanka that proved catastrophic for both sides.

The international community has a responsibility to step in with the full force of power, not only military, but also diplomatic, economic and political to stop that government that deploys its military, its police and its intelligence operatives, as well as mobilizing youth militia to commit political violence and killings directed against the Tamils constitutes genocide which is based on the following points:

(1) The Tamils represent a clearly defined group and those who kill the Tamils do so with the intent to wipe them out as a group.

(2) The killers are encouraged or implicitly supported by the state authorities.

(3) The act of violence and mass killing inflicted upon Tamils are criminal and systematic.

We expect the international community and those in power, the United Nations in particular to take a strong lead now and ensure first of all the ethnic Tamil community’s rights are protected and secondly that there is a solution, quick and rapid in Sri Lanka by supporting the ethnic Tamil community in their quest for an independent homeland to build a better future

All political parties, major civil rights groups joined by religious, labour and civic organisations must apply new pressure on the government of India to press for amendments to the US resolution in the UNHCR to demand an independent international probe into the alleged genocide that took place in Sri Lanka.

We cannot tolerate a world where innocents are killed by extremists based on twisted ideologies. The Sri Lankan government must face charges for war crimes, including the genocide of the ethnic Tamil community.
