I have removed this block, because no supporting evidence has been given to identify any relevant European Union Directive:

  • There has recently been some controversy in Finland because of a new European Union directive of cities. Most prominently, this directive does not count Tampere as a city, because its population density is too low. According to the directive, only six places in Finland count as cities: Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa, Turku, Lahti and Jyväskylä.

If the Directive can be identified, the block may be reinstated. The only references that Google can find is to Council of Europe meetings in the "city of Tampere"! --Red King 16:45, 15 July 2005 (UTC)

It's not an EU directive after all, it's an Eurostat statistical definition. I don't know if they use that definition any more. By Googling I found out that it was adopted in 1998. Googling for "Tampere ei ole kaupunki" ("Tampere is not a city" in Finnish) gets lots of hits, all confirming my claim. Unfortunately, Googling for the English version only hits three Wikipedia mirrors. JIP | Talk 05:58, 20 July 2005 (UTC)
With some further Googling, I have found that Eurostat defines a "densely populated area" as having at least 50,000 people and at least 500 people per km². Tampere meets the first criterion but not the second. However, I can't find any mention of a city having to be a densely populated area. I think that either the definition was changed or the Finnish media misunderstood it. JIP | Talk 09:00, 20 July 2005 (UTC)
It should be noted that Tampere met both of those cirteria in 1965. After that, two rural municipalities have been merged (Aitolahti and Teisko), totalling over 500 km² in area but only about 5000 in population. (Though Aitolahti has grown a bit since that.) --Oami 14:28, 12 June 2006 (UTC)

I added a panorama of Tampere to the commons: [1]. Maybe you can find some use for it. --Smicke 13:48, 22 August 2005 (UTC)

What is the criteria that makes Tampere the second most important center of Finland? Does population do that or is it a geographical fact? I think there is no actual proof about this especially when Turku has a seaport and an internationally strong logistic location. And when we think about population Turku Region has 230.000 people living in area smaller than Tampere. And if we compare city region or historical provinces the difference is always very small, but Turku has higher density of population in each one too. Well and if it is geographical fact therefore Oulu which has whole Lapland under its influence, doesn't that make it much more important center than Tampere. So my purpose was to add that this statement is nothing but controversial and obviously not fact.--jertique I 23:58, 8 November 2007 (UTC)

I think it is very clear that Helsinki is the most important centre of Finland, and either Turku or Tampere is the second. But which of the two, that is a difficult question. I have relatives and friends in both cities, but lately it seems that I've visited Tampere far more often than Turku. JIP | Talk 20:53, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
Tampere is the second. Turku is nowadays much smaller than Tampere. User:Vinksu. 19:55, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

Climate

The climate graphic seems to show the temperature fluctuations. Yet its clearly wrong, this summer the temp has reached 30 C. It seems to be based on the temperatures BEFORE climate change and concomitant global warming. As this is a measured scientific effect - can the temperature be amended accordingly here?? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.231.182.113 (talk) 09:32, 10 August 2010 (UTC)

Student Population

The TUT site listed almost 12000 students at that school, and the UTA article almost 15000 students at that one, so perhaps this article needs to be updated to match. Or alternatively, to not quote student numbers at all, instead referring readers to the detailed articles. --YoavShapira 09:40, 23 December 2005 (EST)

Pronunciation

Someone want to throw up an IPA pronunciation key for this city? Peter1968 17:00, 26 December 2006 (UTC)

Notable persons

I very heavily trimmed the "Notable persons" section, because it looked way too long. I only kept people who are known throughout Finland, and possibly, maybe, there might be one or two people even outside Finland who have heard of one or two of them once in their lives. See Talk:Helsinki for precedent, about removal of non-nationally famous inhabitants of Helsinki. JIP | Talk 19:13, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

Nääsville

The term "Nääsville" certainly exists. It gets 348 unique Google hits. JIP | Talk 17:17, 26 October 2008 (UTC)

The following section was removed but may be correct; any sources?:

  • A briefly used and much less common nickname for Tampere is Nääsville, a portmanteau between the old Tamperean dialect word nääs (meaning something like "you know") and the American city of Nashville. --Espoo (talk) 19:35, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
The nickname exists, that is true. However, I have never heard about the comparison to Nashville, Tennessee. Instead, I believe the word is formed from nääs and ville, a French word meaning "town". Especially, the Nääsville is always pronounced [næːsvilːe], with the "e" at the end of the word voiced as in English "vil-leh". This is how a Finn will pronounce the French "ville" when reading it aloud. In addition, the Finns widely know that "ville" means "town". I think the play on words with "Nashville" is unlikely. --MPorciusCato (talk) 12:55, 5 April 2009 (UTC)
Of course the French "ville" is a part of the nickname. Nevertheless, I wouldn't rule out the connection to Nashville, either by original intent or ex post facto. Then again, sourcing such a connection may prove difficult. –Saruwine (talk) 17:57, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

Layout

What is wrong with the layout of the article? I get a huge blank area between the the intro section and the rest of the article.

Someone had forgotten to close off a <ref> tag, apparently causing the entire section following that to become a reference, or something. I fixed it. 194.100.223.164 (talk) 09:22, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

Four universities?

I find it rather thick to claim that Tampere has four Universities (or actually just plain false). University for applied sciences is merely another name for a Polytechnic. The Finnish article mentions that Tampere has two unis. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.222.74.175 (talk) 20:34, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

manchester of ??? =

"Manchester of Finland" I have never seen this nor heard it. I HAVE seen and heard "The Manchester of the North" - I guess this is a more mdern (mis)interpretation of that "of the North" phrase. Can we have some source for both or either please. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.113.96.60 (talk) 06:43, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

about name origins

The "tammi" theory should have a mention about important and historical part of town called "Tammela" located at east side of central area. The word "Tammela" is related to word tammi, ending "la" found often in Finnish site-names and surnames. If someone could find a reference about this it should be added. 85.194.205.180 (talk) 20:55, 16 August 2011 (UTC)

City & Urban population ?

According to this article , we have:
City area 689.59 km2 & 235,615 inhabitants
Urban area 258.52 km2 & 334,112 inhabitants
T The city area has a much larger area, but still some 100,000 people more are living in the smaller area (=the urban area). Something simply is wrong here. Or is the Tampere City and Tampere Urban area two entirely different towns ? Boeing720 (talk) 03:18, 15 June 2019 (UTC)

Hmm.. Definition of urban area seems to vary by country. In Finland "an urban area is a cluster of buildings with at least 200 inhabitants where the distance between buildings does not exceed 200 metres." Most of the population of Tampere live in southern parts of city and there is rather large and very low population density area to north. So Urban area of Tampere includes maybe quarter of tampere and then parts of neighboring towns. --Seegge "Talk" 20:30, 9 October 2019 (UTC)

Temperature records

There's now several charts of temperature records in article which in my opinion are useless trivia and also make the article worse by creating 'empty space' in the middle of article (because being all aligned left). There was already a climate template which I believe serves typical reader better. Any opinions on removal of those? --Seeggesup? 21:08, 9 October 2019 (UTC)

Support: These charts are unnecessary and take up too much space. The commonly used climate template is enough. —Rutlandbaconsouthamptonshakespeare (talk) 09:59, 11 October 2019 (UTC)
