Origins[edit]

I'm a little surprised by the statements that "The Original Cross was thought to be in existence before 1039AD. St Thomas' Square was thought to be a Market place before Monnow Bridge linked Overmonnow to the rest of the town." Although I'm not an expert on Monmouth's history by any means, I've done quite a lot of reading about it in the last few months, and haven't seen that suggested anywhere else, even in antiquarian sources like this (which is, in parts, a fascinating read, by the way). St Thomas' church was built by around 1180, around the same time that the wooden bridge that preceded the current stone Monnow bridge was built. There may very well have been a bridge or causeway across the (quite narrow and shallow) river before then, but I don't think there's any firm evidence that there was any significant settlement either in Monmouth town centre itself or at Overmonnow between the times of the Romans and the Normans. Having said that, the Monnow was a boundary between English and Welsh areas, and some cross-river trading may have taken place then (as it may have done in similar fashion at Chepstow, incidentally). But I'm not sure that speculative suggestions in C19 newspapers are the best source for making unqualified assertions. Have you found any other sources? I got that part from the western mail 1888. Unfortunately they didn't put their sources. They had that St Thomas' was built on the site of a Norman church dating back to 1039 . I wont object to you changing it if you thinks its unreliable. Perhaps I have misinterpreted. I can send you the article by email if you like. Anthony Cope (talk) 20:11, 9 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Listed buildings in Monmouthshire[edit]

I've taken out this Category, as the cross was its only article. I've put it in Listed buildings in Wales and Grade II listed buildings in Monmouthshire, which I think are right. KJP1 (talk) 12:16, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
