I would give the leading Chinese actor, Kevin Yan as Zhan Zhao a 9/10 and Bai Yu Tang a 9/10 for acting. Episode 1 was fantastic, cool and amazing in The Three Heroes and Five Gallants. However, episodes 3 to 44 did not have many scenes with the two leading male Chinese actors. There were few scenes with Zhan Zhao in them in this drama.
This https://movie.douban.com/subject/25923559/ is bad, is mean and wrong and not nice to rate the overall drama with a 5.2/10. The problem may be with the original novel itself which should not have more scenes with the supporting actors vs. the leading actors. This 2016 drama (Three Heroes and Five Gallants) should be at least a 7/10 versus different ancient Chinese dramas from 2011, 2012 that were rated a 9.5/10.
Martial arts is real and was invented and created in Shaolin and in China. In The Three Heroes and Five Gallants/Five Rats/Downtown Tokyo in episode 19, this great Chinese Asian drama, Zhan Zhao (Yan Kuan) and Ding Yuehua (Zheng Shuang) were competing martial arts and swords on the giant wooden teeter totter or wooden structure. Some aspects of Wuxia dramas may be supernatural such as flying off a cliff but some martial arts sects are real and not fictional (not) Jiang Hu. Zhan Zhao was yielding to her and Zhan Zhao obviously let Ding Yuehua win.
Zhang Weina (Ji Saihua)/Han Zhang's wife and Bai Yu Tang's wife in this drama were cuter than Ding Yuehua.
Zhan Zhao's martial arts ability is much better than Zheng Shuang (Ding Yuehua who acts overly arrogant dressed as a male). Zheng Shuang/Ding Yuehua is annoying in this drama, acting so arrogant as a girl and dressed like a man too often. The screenwriter or author of the Three Heroes and Five Gallants was wrong and feminist in an annoying way re: Ding Yuehua's is (no,no) great at martial arts. Zheng Shuang/Yuehua is bad at doing martial arts and not great the way Zhan Zhao was saying. Chinese Asian men are often better than women in kungfu and martial arts that were invented and created in China. Zheng Shuang is not pretty as a man, other viewers said plastic surgery to her face (Zheng).?
