Information[edit]

Someone who has true information, not word of mouth (like myself) should add something about how he was injured by a cheapshot by Dennis Potvin in the Semi-finals leading to him missing the final games. because of this, the Rangers lost in the playoffs and blame it on Dennis Potvin. This led to the common cheer during Ranger Games "Potvin Sucks!"

I updated the injury information in the article. For your information, Nilsson never said it was a cheap shot or dirty and holds no resentment toward Potvin for it. Also, a few months later, the Rangers beat the Islanders in the 1979 Stanley Cup Semifinals. After the broken ankle in February, Nilsson returned to the Rangers in the 1979 playoffs, but he only appeared in 2 games. I think, but I'm not sure, those games were in the Finals against the Montreal Canadiens. I didn't mention Nilsson's return to the lineup later that season after the injury, because I was unable to find a reliable source saying in which round of the playoffs it occurred. The Rangers fans' anti-Potvin chants continue because they blame Potvin for cutting Nilsson's career short. He scored 20 goals in 50 games the season following the broken ankle. It was a knee injury Nilsson suffered while playing for Sweden at the 1981 Canada Cup that really finished his career. He missed the entire following season and only played 10 more NHL games.
