This article seems to rely on some pretty venerable sources. By chance I have just found that Vicary Gibbs was an executor to the banker Rene Payne (died 1799), who had West Indian connections and was a partner, in Smith Payne and Smiths, of the Nottingham Smith banking family (one of whom founded the Carrington peerage) and legally appointed guardian to his heir, George - so it would seem connected with a fairly heavyweight sector of the West Indian interest - not the only legal figure to be, of course.
