Only Framebuilder in London - not correct[edit]

"It was one of the last custom framebuilders in London, leaving Roberts Cycles in Croydon the only framebuilder in London, and according to Witcomb Cycles one of probably about 15 framebuilders still working today in the UK[1]."

I think this comment should be ammended. It says Roberts is the only framebuilder in London. Condor Cycles, London (www.condorcycles.com) is still an active business. Building its Paris models by hand. Also 14 Bike Co, has been building single speed bike frames at their London workshop for the last few years. Also Brompton Bicycles still build all their folding bikes in London by hand. comment added by an IP on 15 December 2010

Thank you for the comment. I really don't know, but took a look. Condor Cycles talks about framebuilding but nowhere claims that it actually builds frames. This may sound like hairsplitting but it needn't be: I know of "first-world" companies that take measurements, calculate precisely what's required, and then get a Taiwanese or other company to do the work. I can't see any claim at 14 Bike Co that they make frames (although the "custom" part requires Flash, which my computer lacks). Brompton does claim that it makes its frames itself, but I'd like independent confirmation of that. -- Hoary (talk) 12:57, 4 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Framebuilding happens at many businesses in London. Oak cycles [1] make frames, Donhue make frames in Hackney [2] Talbot Frameworks [3] build frames in Crystal Palace. The '15 frame builders in the UK' claim was made in 2009 with no evidence. Tiny bit of info[edit]

Not entirely true to say Witcomb bought E.A.Boult.

E.A.Boult was a Stafford Firm (Ernest Alfred Boult was my grandfather) that built bicycles at one time

As a kid, so probably late `950's I can remember visiting Witcomb's in London with my dad, Bill Boult.

E.A.Boult continued on in Stafford until the late 1970's, in various businesses, branching out from bikes to Motorbikes and Cars, and also into Toys and Fancy goods. The business finally closed on the death of both Bill and later his brother Ben.

I can vaguely remember bike repairs still being apart of the business when I was a small child, but I don't think bike frames were still part of the business then. Though it may have happened at E.A.Boult in Stone (Staffs), which existed for a short time.--Richardb43 (talk) 03:28, 18 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
