I am. when I was that age I kept losing the scarf and purchasing new ones cuz I was so blunderous must've lost like 30 of them in my career as a pioneer lol

Isn't it more of a bandana than a scarf?

Mandatory or Voluntary?

I wanted to know, is membership mandatory in certain schools or is it on a voluntary basis? ABart26 12:50, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

I'll quote the Chinese Wikipedia on this one:

加入中國少年先鋒隊隊章主要以宣誓的方式進行。並且在自願性上存在爭議，而且在中國大陸的很多小學校中存在一種強制加入的制度。要求對象者達到一定年齡或著是年級以後一律集體加入。但這種做法在社會很多方面並沒有太大爭議，但是有人士認為該年齡段的兒童並沒有認知性，是在並無法了解實質的情況下而被強行加入。

Joining the YP of China is done mainly through an oath-taking ceremony, and controversy exists regarding whether it is voluntary. In many elementary schools in mainland China a system of compulsory participation exists, whereby students join as a group once they reach a certain age or grade. This practice does not attract too much controversy in society today, but there are those who believe that children of that age do not have the ability of choice, and are forced to join without understanding the real nature [of the YP].

They join as a group in the second grade if they meet qualifications, and the majority do meet the qualifications, thus whoever wasn't able to join seems almost "stigmatised" in the eyes of other classmates, albeit not from the teachers themselves (it's probably illegal even and could cost the teachers their jobs). Also many new students might enter the school after the 2nd grade and the initiation ceremony, they will have to wait another year until the following year's ceremony to join, if qualified. Non-citizens cannot join; students without household registration could join, but some privileges might be restricted, for example the Three "Goods" (Sānhǎo) awards at the end of the school year is limited to only those Pioneers with proper household registration. I myself entered the school in the second half of third grade, and had to wait until the fourth grade to join, during those months it didn't settle with me that I am the only one in class who didn't have a red scarf or pin, although I don't remember being stigmatised by either the classmates or the teachers for that. I was initiated the following year with the second graders. I don't remember being asked to join, but if I did, I certainly would have replied in the affirmative. To the students it's a privilege to go on camping trips to Inner Mongolia, and basic military training. If anyone doesn't want to join, just behave badly in school and you won't be able!
