Zunda Towers
Zunda Towers
  • ... that the Zunda Towers (pictured) in Riga, Latvia, changed their name from "Z-Towers" to avoid being associated with Russia's invasion of Ukraine? Source: https://archive.today/20220328105547/https://eng.lsm.lv/article/economy/business/riga-landmark-z-towers-change-their-name.a449928/

    • Comment: this is my second dyk nomination, so apologies if i have made any errors. any suggestions or advice is welcome.
admittedly, i have not successfully figured out how to use any of the citation bots yet, so would appreciate help from any wikignomes.
also. i am pretty sure that the towers are the tallest twin skyscrapers in the baltic states, but am unable to find a reliable source that explicitly states this. in addition, i believe one of the two towers may be considered the tallest building in latvia, depending on the definition of "tallest building" used, but i think explaining the definition used may end up being a distraction.

  • The article is long enough (c. 1700 characters) and fresh enough (nominated 7 days after creation). It is neutral and well-sourced. The English-language sources check out, and the Latvian ones appear to do so too using Google Translate. The hook is concise and very interesting. I see no copyright issues with the images (own work by Wikipedia editors and automatically checked FlickR transfers). I do suggest manually filling out the citation templates, though, as it will look far better than bare URLs. Surtsicna (talk) 03:49, 14 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I forgot it was in the supplementary rules. Thank you. Surtsicna (talk) 04:49, 15 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

sorry! one of the control keys on my keyboard has apparently gotten stuck during the past few days, so i have been putting off addressing anything that was not time-sensitive, as writing anything is currently an agonizing process. since i am not in a rush to get this on the main page, can we put this nomination aside for the moment? i can ping once the urls have been addressed. dying (talk) 00:32, 18 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

unexplained deletion[edit]

Denis tarasov, is there a reason for this deletion? admittedly, i was about to revert this as an unexplained deletion, but after noticing that you are familiar with both russian and latvian, and that your edits have a focus on latvian subjects, i am assuming that you know something that i don't. dying (talk) 01:40, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Removed advertisement, outdated deleted reference, and it's illegal to sell in Bitcoins in Latvia, official currency in Latvia - euro Denis Tarasov (talk) 06:56, 9 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Denis Tarasov, the statement that you removed is not an advertisement; it is part of an encyclopedic description of the tower. it is not unusual to state that condominium units are being sold in a newly built tower; the article on the brooklyn tower, which recently appeared on dyk, mentions the same at the end of its lead. i had mentioned that the condominium units could be purchased with cryptocurrency because i had felt that this was notable, as i do not believe this is usually the case. (that being said, i am not in the market for a luxury condominium unit, so i could easily be wrong about this.) i did not mention which cryptocurrency because i did not believe it was relevant; that units were available for purchase in any cryptocurrency at all was what i felt was notable.
in addition, various reliable sources had conflicting descriptions of what the towers were going to house, presumably because the plans for the towers ended up changing over the years, so i had thought that a good way to determine what the towers are currently being used for was to find a source that described what was currently being offered on the market. i will readily admit that i do not have a good grasp of latvian sources, so if you know of a better source that i could use, i would be happy to use it.
also, i am not sure how the reference is outdated, but would be interested if you have an updated reliable source to share. the statement you removed mentioned that the towers include rental apartments, as well as condominium units that can be purchased with cryptocurrency. if this is no longer the case, then i assume that either (1) the towers no longer contain rental apartments, (2) the towers no longer contain condominium units, (3) no condominium units are available for purchase, or (4) condominium units can no longer be purchased with cryptocurrency. do you have a reliable source that supports any of these four alternatives?
i am not a latvian lawyer, so i am not familiar with the technicalities regarding using cryptocurrency in latvia, but this thomson reuters source suggests that selling cryptocurrency is not illegal in latvia, but simply not regulated. as the government imposes a "20% tax on capital gains from cryptocurrencies", i assume that the state acknowledges that cryptocurrencies exist and is happy to profit from their existence. in any case, even if using cryptocurrency in latvia is illegal, i do not believe this is relevant, because i do not think it is standard practice to remove the description of an action from wikipedia simply because the action is illegal. (i presume that there are also condominium units for sale in euros, but i see no reason to mention this in the article.) dying (talk) 08:33, 11 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
