- ... that Hans Klumbach connected the late Roman ridge helmets (example pictured) to the medieval spangenhelme? Source: Johnson 1980, p. 309: "Most of Klumbach's examples of late Roman helmets are of two half caps of iron only; in only four of the helmets normally assigned to the late Roman period is this rule broken. These are the helmets from Conçesti, Berkasovo I, Dêr-el-Medineh, and probably Deurne. According to Klumbach's typology, these helmets (apart from Deurne) form the natural end to a sequence of helmet-construction in which Roman craftsmen adapted their design, first from a cap made from a single piece of iron (as in most of the helmets of the first and second centuries) to a cap made from two pieces riveted to a central crest which formed the spine; then to a helmet made of several pieces of iron (up to six), joined together by widening ribs running transversely down from a central topmost point. This last form of helmet is the so-called 'Spangenhelm' of early medieval date" (parentheticals and footnotes omitted).

Interesting life, on few but good sources, offline sources accepted AGF, no copyvio obvious. I am not happy "helmets" here, "helme" there in the hook, but perhaps that can't be avoided? The image is licensed, and shows well. In the article, there's something preceded by "fifth century AD", and I not only believe that it should be "fifth-century ...", but also that it might be better phrased differently. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:24, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

- I thought it was clear that I am not happy with (English) helmets and (German) "helme", but probably there's no way around it. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:04, 21 March 2018 (UTC)
- I see what you mean now—"spangenhelm" has basically been appropriated as an English word, to the extent that when I read it I don't see the word "helmets", I just see a term of art. I think that makes it's use okay, as unless one is fluent in German (as are you), it doesn't seem awkward. --Usernameunique (talk) 21:18, 21 March 2018 (UTC)
