Blue ensign requested[edit]

Can a variant be added for Image:Government Ensign of the United Kingdom.svg? This is the blue ensign used for some commercial ships, especially historic ships such as the RMS Titanic. United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland[edit]

We need {{Country data United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland}} creating. I've had to do a work around to get the United Kingdom to link to the correct article. Also, many ships articles covering ships on the UK register up to 1922 currently link to United Kingdom instead of United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, so the civil and government ensigns will need to be added. The naval ensign really should link to the Royal Navy article. To save a lot of typing, would it be possible to call the template UKGBI (is a redirect a possibility)? Removal of 1606 and naval-1707 variants[edit]

These icons are now only available from {{Country data Kingdom of Great Britain}}. This is an improvement, since the previously used idiom of {{flagicon|UK|1606}} linked to the United Kingdom article, whereas {{flagicon|Kingdom of Great Britain}} links to the more appropriate Kingdom of Great Britain article. True, however, in this template there could be an exception for the Army Flag. The 1:2 flag looks awkwardly redundant with the 3:5 flag, e.g. John Brunt, 216 Parachute Squadron Royal Signals; and the Army Flag is nearly 20 years older than its equivalent United States Army flag, oddly which is one of only two branch flags (the other the United States Air Force flag) in {{Country data US}}. I think the real question to be answered is what is the intended use of these icons. For example, there is consensus to use naval ensigns on ship articles, but the (mostly ornamental) air force and army flags are occasionally used within {{Infobox military person}} instances, but not universally. (Also note that the ornamental File:USNavyFlag-Official.svg is only used as a decoration within {{US Navy navbox}} and two vexillology articles, and nowhere else.) I don't think those instances are compliant with WP:MOSFLAG either, as they are "purely decorational". Well, there is no such thing as {{army-non-ceremonial}}, so that wikicode isn't going to work, and would be awkward to implement.

Navy/naval flag and link alias inconsistencies[edit]

The current template is inconsistent in its handling of navy/naval flag and link aliases, as a result of which some only work when used with {{naval}} but not with {{navy}}. I've been tinkering in the sandbox and I think I've fixed it so that all flag-alias-navy, flag-alias-naval, link-alias-navy, and link-alias-naval variants now work when used with either {{navy}} or {{naval}}. Martin, you probably saw the testcases page while I was changing the sandbox to make some tests. It's now back to the nom's sandbox version (with a small change I made from |var9=consulate to |var6=consulate), so there are a few differences now when you purge the testcases page. Again, while the changes do appear to be acceptable for use as shown on the testcases page, I still have an issue with the variants not appearing in the Flag variants table. Editors would look at this template and not know they could apply the GS variant or others that also don't appear. I'm just not sure this edit is an improvement. Yes, that's correct and the way it should be. Compare with the live template:
 Royal Navy (navy live)
 Royal Naval Reserve (navy sandbox)
 Royal Naval Reserve (naval live)
 Royal Naval Reserve (naval sandbox)

I asked that same question long ago. Editors who have been involved with these Country data templates answered that many of them actually do have different results for navy and naval. And that has proven to be true as I've edited these through the years. In this particular template, the navy and naval yield (or should yield) the same flags and links. To editors Jay D. Easy, Trappist the monk and Martin: there is a new version in the [sandbox] that appears to do what the nom wants AND make the flag variants appear in the Flag variants table. It seems that the switches work okay with link aliases, but not with flag aliases. Each flag alias must have its own parameter in the Country showdata template if it is to appear in the Flag variants table to help editors find them. They must also be included in the list of |var#= parameters. The Country showdata template allows up to |var=40, and this template only appears to need 17 variants in those parameters.
