Southwest Airlines Flight 8701 was a ferry flight of their Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft from Orlando International Airport to Victorville, California. During the early stages of the flight, the flight crew reported a right engine failure.[2]

Incident[edit]

Flight 8701, was flying from Orlando International Airport in Florida to Victorville Airport in California. Due to the recent FAA and worldwide Boeing 737 MAX 8 grounding's, caused in action of the recent Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines accidents, the aircraft has been banned from operating passenger flights. However, transfer flights were allowed in certain circumstances. The aircraft was planned to be parked at the Southern California Logistics Airport in Victorville, until the grounding has been lifted.[3]

The flight departed from Orlando International at 14:30 (local time). at 14:50, the crew reported to ATC that their right engine was inoperative. The crew headed back to Orlando international, following protocol. They landed at 15:00. There were no passengers on board.[4]

Aftermath[edit]

The aircraft has been moved to the Orlando Airport Maintenance Hangar to be assessed.
