Jeffrey Beebe (born 1961) is a American contemporary artist, best known for his artwork detailing the cartography, history, and mythology of his secondary world, Refractoria, which he describes as "a comprehensive imagino-ordinary world that is equal parts autobiography and pure fantasy".[1]

Background[edit]

Beebe was born and grew up in Indianapolis. He went to college at the American Academy of Art in Chicago and earned a BFA in 1999. In 2004, he moved to Queens, New York City to attend the School of Visual Arts,[6] graduating with a MFA in 2006.[7]

Works[edit]

Beebe's works also includes fantastic autobiographical maps of real world cities he's lived in, Indianapolis (2011)[8] and Chicago (2011)[9] and New York, the City of Sociopaths (2013).[10][11]

Influences[edit]

"My chosen language is derived from the benign, totally unnuanced language of commercial illustration, children's books, Japanese monster movies, Saturday morning cartoons, etc. It doesn't really match up with the professed dark intention of the work".[12]

"Dungeons & Dragons set off a small bomb in my brain because it provided a loose structure for creating these imaginary worlds and populating them with weird and fantastic characters and weaving the whole deal into a story".[6]

Critical[edit]

"watercolors on paper depicting a surreal world inhabited by comic-like characters often situated in dreamlike landscapes"[13]
