Hello, welcome to your New Page Patrol School page! Every person I instruct will have their own page on which I will give them support and tasks for them to complete. Please make sure you have this page added to your watchlist. Your NPP School page has been specifically designed according to you and what you have requested instruction in - for that reason, please be as specific as possible when under my instruction, so that I know the best ways to help you (and do not be afraid to let me know if you think something isn't working).

Make sure you read through Wikipedia:Notability as that's the knowledge which most of the questions I ask you and tasks you do will revolve around.

How to use this page

This page will be built up over your time in the Academy, with new sections being added as you complete old ones. Each section will end with a task, written in bold type - this might just ask a question, or it might require you to go and do something. You can answer a question by typing the answer below the task; if you have to do something, you will need to provide diffs to demonstrate that you have completed the task. Some sections will have more than one task, sometimes additional tasks may be added to a section as you complete them. Please always sign your responses to tasks as you would on a talk page.

If both the instructor and student make completing the course curriculum a top priority, it will generally take around a month to go through the entirety of the curriculum. This pace is not required or necessarily expected, but rather is provided in order to give participants an idea of what to expect.

Notability

PART 1

When patrolling or reviewing an article, you may often come across articles do not meet the WP:N guidelines, but the editors make the edits in good faith. Please read WP:AGF and do not WP:BITE the new editors.

A. Notability is a test guidelines to decide whether a given topic warrants its own article in Wikipedia mainspace. Please read Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not, General Notability Guidelines, Specific Notability Guidelines, Stand-alone list before completing the following tasks.

General notability guidelines

1. In your own words, why it is important to WP:AGF and not WP:BITE new editors.

Answer: If we were to treat new editors with hostility, they might be discouraged from further editing, or we might even get into an edit war with them over something that could've been resolved with a simple, thoughtful request. 2. In your own words, how is notability defined in Wikipedia?

Answer: Notability on Wikipedia is used to determine whether or not a topic, media, person, etc. is fleshed out enough to have its own article. In Wikipedia, notability means "worthy to be noted" - it is defined as a topic is "presumably" notable for stand-alone article or list if (1) it has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject whee by the sources talk "directly" about the subject in depth and in length and not only passing mentioned and (2) it is not excluded under the What WP:Wikipedia is not policy. 3. Does a step by step instructions on how to "Change a car tire" considered a notable topic in Wikipedia?

Answer: No, as a step-by-step process might be too short to be considered notable. There might not be enough sources, or the entire set of instructions might be considered redundant, as there could be existing parent articles that are more preferable. While standalone lists are allowed, they're generally reserved for disambiguations or they go into much more detail than just a simple list. For example, a list of episodes in a TV show doesn't just list the title of the episode, but also a brief synopsis, production date, writers, etc., or it may even have its own article to go even further in depth. - OpalYosutebito (talk) 13:03, 16 April 2024 (UTC)

4. What are the differences between A WP:GNG and a specific notability guidelines? how do we determine which one to use when patrolling an article?

Answer: An SNG is more in-depth than a GNG, as GNGs mainly tackle significant coverage while SNGs change dramatically depending on the topic being written. Some SNGs even have rules that discourage certain articles from being created. However, just because an article passes GNG and/or SNG doesn't mean it's exempt from being patrolled. Determining whether an article falls under SNG criteria requires a deeper analysis than looking for GNG criteria, as some SNGs are much stricter than others.

Y GNG are used for all articles regardless of the topic/subject. Specific notability guidelines (SNG) or sport specific notability guidelines (SSG) offer a more in-depth criteria for different topics. Both can be used when patrolling but those subject falls under SNG/SSG (sport specific guidelines) however, SSN or SNG do NOT superseded GNG. If fails to meet the WP:GNG guidelines would sometimes nominated for deletion WP:AfD for discussion to determine the status of the article; it's important to check SNG which may save the article from deletion. Specific notability guidelines

5. If an editor creates an article about "2028 Summer Olympics" in 2024 without providing any sources, is the subject considered not notable and why?

Answer: The subject isn't considered notable, as notability solely depends on the existence of sources, which the subject doesn't have. - OpalYosutebito (talk) 13:03, 16 April 2024 (UTC)

Y strictly speaking yes it is not notable but the subject is considered notable as 1. it had widespread effect as an international event, 2. it has already been written about in independent sources. 3. it's in relatively near future with set place and dates (Summer Olympics 2040 would not pass for instance. Host of the Olympic country usually announced 8 years prior to the event and sources should be easily found on the web. Cassiopeia talk 05:20, 21 April 2024 (UTC)

B. Without consideration of sources/content policies and reviewing just based on "subject specific notability" (SSN) "alone" for sake of the exercises below, please answer if the subject meets the SSN guidelines, based on the given content below, and specify under (1) which notability criteria they meet or fail (example - MUSICBI#1 if certain subset of criteria is applicable) and (2) reasons/explanations.

6. A New York city based 2023 start up software company, specializing in data mining, has just received a USD 200K investor fund.

7. Guram Kutateladze is a mixed martial arts fighter who fights under Ultimate Fighting Championships with a record MMA record of 12-4.

Answer: The mere fact that he has a good fighting record isn't enough for Guram to be considered "notable". He hasn't been ranked in the world top 10, so it's unlikely that significant coverage would exist for him. NMMA#1 - OpalYosutebito (talk) 21:34, 16 March 2024 (UTC)

8. A upcoming action drama title "Suleiman the Great" based on the the life of Suleiman the Magnificent, was reported to be in production in February 2024 and to be released on August 2024 in the cinemas.

Answer: It's too soon to tell whether or not this is notable. When the time comes for the movie to be produced, unless if the production itself is notable in some way, it shouldn't immediately get its own article. Also, the fact that it's about one of the most famous Ottoman Emperors doesn't automatically make it notable, as famous people's lives are adapted into films all the time. 9. A political candidate, without any previous or current political position, who is running for the November 2024 election for a Senator position in the United States with multiple local newspapers covering his candidacy.

Answer: Even with some local newspapers covering him, it's unlikely there would be enough information to make an entire article about him, as most articles on people are covered by much larger sources. In short, just being a candidate isn't enough for him to have his own article, and what few sources there are on him don't provide a diverse enough range of information about him to warrant an article to begin with. WP:POLITICIANS

10. A singer who self produced his first album in May 2023 and his songs are listed in Spotify.

Answer: People add their own music to social media and music uploading sites (Spotify, SoundCloud, etc) all the time, but that doesn't make them notable. The singer's album hasn't gotten any significant coverage, nor has it charted on Billboard. Frank Lloyd Wright (June 8, 1867 – April 9, 1959) was an American architect, interior designer, writer, and educator. Wright believed in designing structures that were in harmony with humanity and its environment, a philosophy he called organic architecture. His creative period spanned more than 70 years. He works includes The Guggenheim, swirling, snail-shaped museum in the middle of Manhattan. Fallingwater, which has been called "the best all-time work of American architecture."
