Slot machines: Are they really addicting enough to keep someone there for fifty years?

The Lotus Hotel and Casino is a fictional place mentioned in the Percy Jackson & the Olympians book series written by Rick Riordan. When Greek mythology moved to the United States, the lotus-eaters were moved to this hotel/casino in Las Vagas.

The original casino goers[edit]

In Homer's Oddyssey, the lotus-eaters lived on an island in the Mediterranean Sea close to Africa, eating the flowers and fruit of the lotus tree, hence their name. In the original myth, those who ate the fruit of the tree fell into a sleepy trance, forgetting their families and their lives. After ingesting some of the fruit, soldiers wanted to stay with the lotus-eaters forever.

The natives lured the people onto their island by showing friendship and generosity toward the strangers. Once visitors came onto the land they were given food to eat: the lotus fruit.
