The most mind-numbingly drearing game of gridiron ever
The English and French national American football teams battled to a soccer-style zero-zero tie here today in London's Vodafone Stadium, in what was described by one fan as "three hours of absolute boredom." Both teams rarely threatened to get the ball in the red zone - in fact it wasn't until towards the end of the first quarter when we saw the first first-down of the game, England QB John Matthews finding WR Christian Sarpong for 15 yards on the third down. Both teams were awesome on defense, but their offense just couldn't deliver. France's best drive of the game came in the second quarter when QB David Vignault hit WR Jean Mtami for 45 yards on the English 20-yard line shortly before the two-minute warning. But the French offense fluffed their lines when Vignault was sacked for 25 yards by LB Dwayne Wilson on third down and K Laurent Rouge's subsequent field-goal fell just short. After an error-strewn second half that was headlined by English CB Rob Garrett's five interceptions, England had a chance to win it 3-0 with K Johnny Frost, a former soccer player in the BritLeague and the English national team, trying to fire a monstrous 40-yard kick for the win. But Frost's effort was blocked by the French defense, and both teams coaches, England's Tom Gale and France's Bubba Pereault, will look back and give high-fives to their defenses, but also reflect on why their offenses didn't score any points.
