Geroge Hofer

George Tacao Hofer (26 February 1938 – 6 January 2019) also known as Tatang George Hofer, and by the initials GTH and GH, is a Filipino doctor, businessman and politician who served as first Governor of Zamboanga Sibugay from June 30, 2001 until June 30, 2010 and it's founding father.

Early life and education[edit]

Geroge born as Geroge Tocao Hofer on February 26, 1938 in Malabang, Lanao, to Don Pablo Hofer a businessman and Doña Manuela Tocao a businesswoman. His paternal grandparents is a SwedishGerman accountant of La Fabrica Hans Hofer and businesswoman Ana Castillanes. Geroge is the four of the ten children of Don Pablo and Doña Manule Hofer. George born with a silver spoon in his mouth but as a child, he had to work in the fields with his older brother Pablito Hofer to earn his keep.

He start his education in Lanao del Sur. He start his high school in Notre Dame University in Cotabato, Maguindanao. In 1960 he start his college in Far Eastern University Institute of Nursing in Manila he later went to Southwestern University in Cebu City, Cebu to complete his Medicine career and later graduate and became license Medical Doctor.

Political life[edit]

In 1992, without support from any politicla group, he ran for Mayor of Titay and later won by an overwhelming majority of the votes over the incumbent Mayor named Federico Diamante who also known as the "Balete" in Titay because he was unbeatable. This paved the way for a political career he and his family never dreamed of nor longed for the dawning of an entirely different kind of life for them. His first projects were the building of more roads and the installation of running water. He was the first to build a three-storey structure to house the municipal offices an impressive landmark in the heart of Titay. In 1995 he seek reelection and later again won by a majority of the votes. In an interview he said: “When i was the Mayor of Titay i said to my self this is not enough the people's need me so in 1998 instead to run for my third and final term as Mayor of Titay, i chose to run to the Congress for the Zamboanga del Sur's 3rd District.”

Personal life[edit]

George married to Dulce Alcazaren Kintanar the daughter of former Mayor of Argao Vicente "Vicing" C. Kintanar, Sr. and Agapita Alcazaren, when George and Dulce meet George was already inlove to Dulce. After dating for almost 5 months they married on November 29, 1965 in Sacred Hearth Parish Church in Cebu City. The marriage is first schedule on Decemver 4, 1965, becuase a week before Vicente "Tatay Vicing" Kintanar had a Cardiac Arrest and already in Coma. So the weading rushed because if anything should happen to Tatay Vicing. The grand reception was held in Magellan's International Hotel.

In the evening of April 1, 1966 Dulce gave birth to their first child and son named George Kintanar Hofer II or also known as Jet. A year after June 3, 1967 another baby was born this time is a girl named Dulce Ann Kintanar Hofer also known as Ann. George also fathered a daughter named Marietta, before marriage to Dulce.

One year later, George brought his family in Malabang, Lanao del Sur. He had put his own Medical clinic where he specialized in surgery, while Dulce in Family medicine. In 1971, George operated his first logging concession in South Cotabato. Not long after, he expanded hus business activity by operating a logging concession in Maitum, South Cotabato.

Then in 1986, when Corazon Aquino became Preaident, all logging permits were cancelled and exportation of logs was banned. The end of the logging operations was a major blow to George. It was not only the main source of income for him but also for hundreds of workers in Davao, Maitum, Cebu, Zamboanga and also in Manila who depended on his company fo a living. The ban on the exportation of logs sealed the termination of the logging business for good. Because of this critical upheaval in his life, he had to redirect his business activity elsewhere and bank on his sound judgment in exploring the possibilities that are left for him.

He was so quick to plan a new course of action, and that is to go into farming. Having acquired some property in Titay, Zamboanga del Sur, he wasted to time in looking for them. But, then, the roads leading to his properties were so bad that he had difficulty locating them. He was able to develop 48 hectares of rice paddies, about 60 hectares of rubber plantation, and some chromite mining. Everyone noticed, including the Barangay Captain of Poblacion Ernesto Castillo. And he was very very impressed. So with some supporters, he urged to run for Mayor of Titay, but he was not interested, especially when the salary was not acttractive enough.
