Shripad Krishna Belvalkar (12 December 1880 – 8 January 1967) was an Indian scholar who contributed in the fields of Sanskrit literature, philosophy and indology. He was one of the founder members of the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, Poona.
Biography[edit]
Belvalkar was born on 12 December 1880 at Narsobachi, a small village in Kolhapur district of Maharashtra state.[1][2] His mother was died when he was 20 months old, and thereafter he was brought up by his aunt.[2]
He received his primary education from the Marathi School at Herle, a village near Kolhapur. After passing his matriculation examination in 1897 from the Rajaram High School, Kolhapur, he joined the Rajaram College at the same place.[2]
In collaboration with his friends and college-fellows, he founded the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute in 1917 at Poona.[3]
Following the practice of child marriage, Belvalkar married a 7 year old girl when he was 16.[2]
Belvalkar died on 8 January 1967 at Poona.[3]
Contribution[edit]
Belvalkar contributed to various fields including grammar, epics, classical Sanskrit literature, poetics, Indian philosophy and textual criticism.[4]
He wrote System of Sanskrit Grammar for a competition, the Vishwanath Narayan Mandlik Prize Essay. Published in 1915 and spanning 120 pages, the essay gives an account of various system of Sanskrit grammar.[4]
Recognition[edit]
He was a fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society and the Asiatic Society of Bombay.[3]
