The Waakching (Meitei: /wāk.cíŋ/), also spelled as the Wakching (Meitei: /wak.cíŋ/), is the tenth month of the Meitei calendar.[1]
History[edit]
Reigns[edit]
- Friday, the 5th of Waakching 1588 Kum (31st December 1666 AD): At the age of 22, Paikhomba ascended the Meitei throne and ruled for thirty-one years.[2]
- Thursday, the 28th of Waakching 1619 Kum (9th January 1698 AD): Meitei king Paikhomba died after his 31 years of reign.[2]
Military expeditions[edit]
- Waakching 1593 Kum (December/January 1672 AD): Meitei King Paikhompa captured 12 prisoners from Khanpok, during which a Meetei soldier named Nukhanpa Likmapamcha died.[3]
- Waakching (December 1691 CE/January 1692 AD): All the ten Sangs (Meitei for 'military departments') under the leadership of Oinamcha Senlungpa and Lamloi, the Achoipa Hanchapa went to the battle and attacked the regions of Lamtong and Sakang, during which Naosemcha Pakara died in the combat.[4]
Elephant hunting expedition[edit]
- Monday, the 9th of Waakching (13th January 1840 AD): the hunting team of King Nara Singh returned without catching any elephant.[5]
Public utility services[edit]
- Friday, the 28th of Waakching (15th January 1847 AD): Moirangthem Keirungpa was ordered to clear the bed of the canal in the region of Sikhong.[6]
- Monday, the 28th of Waakching 1770 Kum (22nd July 1849 AD): people of all the four Leikais (Meitei for 'localities') carried bricks for building the Sanathong (Meitei for 'the royal gate').[6]
- Monday, the 17th of Waakching (31st December 1849 AD), the King organised a feast on Singchu (Error: {{language with name/for}}: missing language tag or language name (help)) for all the people who were engaged in building the Kangla.[7]
Polo matches[edit]
- Saturday, the 1st of Waakching 1771 Kum (15th December 1849 AD): the Ningthem Macha (Meitei for 'Princes') led by the crown prince played a match of Kangchei (Error: {{language with name/for}}: missing language tag or language name (help)) against the noblemen. The Meitei princes won over the nobles. The nobles (losers) organized a feast for the princes (winners).[8]
- Monday, the 3rd of Waakching (17th December 1849 AD): the princes once again defeated the nobles in another match of Kangchei (polo).[8]
- Saturday, the 7th of Waakching (22nd December 1849 AD): the people living in Laipham defeated the princes in a polo match.[8]
- Sunday, the 8th of Waakching (23rd December 1849 AD): the Ayokpa defeated the Akhanpa in a polo match.[8]
- Friday, the 14th of Waakching (28th December 1849 AD): the princes led by crown prince defeated the people living in Khapam in a polo match.[8]
Religious activities[edit]
- Thursday, the 18th of Waakching (15th January 1846 AD): the sacred image of goddess Sarangthem Lairemma was completely constructed.[9]
