Vinayakar Chathurthi (விநாயகர் சதுர்த்தி)

As per the Hindu vedas Vinayakar is the first born son of Lord Shiva and goddess Parvathi. The birth story of Lord Vinayakar(in Tamil: கடவுள் பிள்ளையார்) is quiet different. In the ancient time, One fine day at mount kailash(in Tamil:கயிலை மலை), the godess Parvathi( In Tamil: பார்வதி தேவி ) went to take a bath. At the same time, lord shiva and the gate keeper of the mount kailash Lord Nandi (in Tamil:நந்தி ஈஸ்வரர் ) were not available. Since lord parvathi doesn't want any intruder in the mount kailash. She has created a boy from her dirt and turmeric and named him as Pillaiyar. She ordered to avoid every intruder at all cost. By the order of his mom, he went to take the position to keep the mount kailash away from the intruders.

In the meantime, Lord Shiva entered into the Mount Kailash to see Godess parvathi. As per godess Parvathi's order,  Lord Ganesh stopped him without knowing who Lord Shiva really is. After several arguments and clash of super powers, Lord Shiva has lost his patience. So he uses his Trident (in Tamil:திரிசூலம்) to rip off the head of the Lord Ganesh.

Since Lord shiva's rage was not decreasing even after the fight, the Lord Bharma( in Tamil:கடவுள் பார்மா ) and Lord Vishnu( in Tamil:கடவுள் விஷ்ணு ) have came to make Lord shiva as normal as possible. They have told that who the lord Ganesha really was.

After knowing this, Lord Shiva feels so guilty of this incident. Since Lord Vinayakar's head was ripped by the trident of Lord Shiva, He can't able to revive. Lord Bharma advice him to take a head of a animal which is resting near its mother and faces the north direction. So the Devar ( in Tamil:தேவர்கள்) and Asuras (in Tamil - அசுரர் ) went over the world. They found out the baby elephant lying with his mother facing the North direction. So they ripped the head of the Elephant and went back to the Mount Kailash.

Without any further delay, Lord Shiva jointed the Head of the Baby elephant to the Body of the Lord Vinayakar and revived him. Suddenly Godess Parvathi came out from her bath and became so angry by seeing the cruelty faced by her son. She argues with Lord shiva that he has destoryed her son with his rigorous activities. So she request Lord shiva to give his blessing that the Lord Vinayakar will be the One to be worshipped before all deities.

From that day, every one celebrates the day as Vinayagar Chathurthi.

In India, in the month of Aavani (in Tamil: ஆவணி) after the 3 rd day of new moon day(in Tamil:பௌர்ணமி). We are celebrating this day by moulding the structure of Lord Vinayagar with clay, sand, turmeric or auspicious materials and worship him. Peoples will make sweets like sweet kolukattai(in Tamil:கொழுக்கட்டை )(Moduka) and distributes to their family, neighbours and the crowd.
