Thanks for your response. Sorry, but I can't provide you with a link; I don't know of any written policy. My impression, acquired through osmosis, is that a stub is only a beginning, barely scratches the surface, contains a small fraction of the information that a good article would eventually convey, etc. In this instance, I think you're right to destub. There's just not much more that can be added. I called it no big deal because poor old Pope John XX may be one of a kind. Hi Mero. If you haven't managed to install the fonts yet that you mentioned on Brion's talk page, there are some easy to follow instructions at this site. Song names in quotes[edit]

Howdy. I've been clearing up article titles containing quotes (normally created after following a red-link on a list of songs, albums, movies or books that has double-quote marks inside rather than outside the square brackets and moved immediately thereafter). I notice that you created a number of redirects to song titles (particularly popular Beatles songs) with quotes in the title - for instance "I_Am_the_Walrus" for I_Am_the_Walrus - on June 17th this year. Island nation[edit]

The English language is not cut and dry. Nation can mean a cultural entity, but it can also be a synonym for country. Island nation is the standard name among both geographers and the general population for a country located on an island. Look what "island country" turns up on Google, hardly any of the hits are what you seem to think the term refers to. - SimonP 16:59, Sep 19, 2004 (UTC)

On your language lists[edit]

While I feel your plan on creating language families was not ill-founded, it appears terribly inconvenient in practice, seeing as one must click several times in order to get to a language of choice. In addition, the lists are what I would call "internally orphaned"; that is, they link to themselves and to a few other articles, but other articles do not link to the lists. I would therefore prefer that they instead become redirects to their better-done language family articles (such as List of Germanic languages to Germanic language), which have information that ultimately makes these lists redundant and obsolete. The new List of (language family) pages[edit]

I applaud your efforts to add so many missing language families to Wikipedia - but nonetheless, hang on a second! This is producing serious overlap, in the case of Berber at least, and - due to the Ethnologue's sometimes author-specific classifications - POV problems as well. I'm really glad to see all this new Chadic stuff - I've been hoping someone else would do that! :) - and Cushitic could certainly use some bot work as well, but in general... don't you think a hierarchical List of Afro-Asiatic languages can be better covered through Afro-Asiatic languages and its children? This applies especially to Semitic, since the Ethnologue omits most extinct languages. Ah. I see there's already been an argument of sorts over this in Indo-European languages. Well, my case against splitting taxonomical listings of languages from the main articles is:

POV. Lower-level groupings (as in [[Berber and Semitic alike) are quite typically somewhat controversial among linguistics; this is compounded by the Ethnologue's refusal to give its sources for taxonomy, and the fact that it not infrequently (as with Senhaja de Srair language) simply gets it wrong for lack of data. These issues cannot be addressed in a list; they require a full discussion of the various taxonomical efforts (see, for what I'd love to have on all of them, Afro-Asiatic languages#Classification history.
Inaccuracy: having worked far too extensively with the Ethnologue, I know of too many cases where its language lists are inappropriate or wrong to want to dump the whole thing in here. For instance, Ethnologue's version of Nafusi language is not even a valid node (Zuara and Jerbi are Zenati, while Nafusi proper is not); and their division of Arabic dialects/languages is thoroughly arbitrary. There's a reason they list "Data accuracy estimate: B, C" for most of the Middle East and North Africa.
Duplication of effort. A lot of language node pages already consist of little more than a list; almost all of them contain one already, if they exist at all.

I do think your bot could be a good idea, at least in some parts of the world (notably Papua - I doubt anyone's ever gonna get around to much of that); I just think that it should be integrated with the main pages (ie not List of Alacalufan languages so much as Alacalufan languages, etc....), so that when the time comes to expand it and fix any Ethnologue errors, that can be done from a single page. - Mustafaa 11:08, 21 Oct 2004 (UTC)

You claim that Wikipedia is run by a majority vote -- does that imply that you intend to advocate that all arbcom decisions should be made democratically by the community?

In any case, you claim that nobody "hates the Wikipedia" yet you also claim that they are just "taking advantage of our openness" -- why would vandals choose to vandalize, if dislike of wiki-policy is not a motive? Surely you don't have the naive belief that persistent vandals are motivated by sheer lunacy??
I assure you, there are people who hate the Wikipedia because it is run by a cabal. Numerous decisions here are made without democratic consensus, and many democratic votes are not well advertised or promoted (thus resulting in the domination of these votes by a small clique of hyper-active sysops).
Rather than advocating increased totalitarianism and banning of users whom you dislike, have you given any thought to the notion of making the wikipedia a friendlier place by requiring that sysops adhere to a higher standard of conduct?

Article Licensing[edit]

Hi, I've started the Free the Rambot Articles Project which has the goals of getting users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to...

...all U.S. state, county, and city articles...
...all articles...

using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) version 1.0 and 2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to the GFDL (which every contribution made to Wikipedia is licensed under), but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles (See the Multi-licensing Guide for more information). Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. So far over 90% of people who have responded have done this.

Nutshell: Wikipedia articles can be shared with any other GFDL project but open/free projects using the incompatible Creative Commons Licenses (e.g. WikiTravel) can't use our stuff and we can't use theirs. It is important to us that other free projects can use our stuff. So we use their licenses too.

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the {{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}} template (or {{MultiLicensePD}} for public domain) into their user page, but there are other templates for other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1

I agree to [[Wikipedia:Multi-licensing|multi-license]] all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
