Rangsit (Thai: รังสิต, pronounced [rāŋ.sìt]) is a city and neighbourhood in Pathum Thani Province, Thailand. Rangsit is a metropolitan city supporting Bangkok's expansion in the north. Rangsit has become a departure point for travel to north, northeast, and eastern Thailand provinces. By covers, the area from the north of Bangkok, Pathum Thani to Saraburi, and the east side of the Chao Phraya River with an area of approximately 2,000 km² (about 772 mi²). An administrative area that covers the entire Tambon Prachathipat and has the Rangsit Prayoonsak canal runs through the center. The area is divided into two sections, Khlong Rangsit on the north and Khlong Rangsit on the south.

Rangsit is the home of Rangsit University[1] and the area is served by Rangsit station on the SRT's northern line and dark red line.



History[edit]

In the past, the area of Rangsit was a vast field, covering the area from the north of Bangkok, Pathum Thani to Saraburi and the east side of the Chao Phraya River was called "Thung Luang" (ทุ่งหลวง, refers to large field), with an area of approximately 2,000 km² (about 772 mi²).

At that time, it was a place of habitat for many kinds of wildlife, such as wild elephants, therefore called "Tha Khlong" (ท่าโขลง, refers to pier of herd of elephants) in another name. There are often wild elephants from Khao Yai often living. In addition, it was also the only habitat in the world of Schomburgk's deer (Rucervus schomburgki) an extinct medium-sized deer.

Until the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) in middle Rattanakosin period, Thailand's first irrigation canal was canalized and passed through this area, it was called "Khlong Rangsit" in honour to his son, Prince Rangsit Prayurasakdi, Prince of Chainat, causing Rangsit to become an agricultural area especially rice cultivation, including various kinds of fruits such as tangerine and make the area of Rangsit continue to prosper respectively.[2]

  • 31 August 1955, Democratic Sanitation was established in the Prachathipat Sub-District area from the Northern Railway to Khlong Nueng. Published in Gazette Volume 72, Chapter 74, dated September 17, 1955.[3]
  • 5 March 1963, the democratic sanitation area was expanded to cover the entire Prachathipat sub-district. Published in the Government Gazette, Volume 80, Chapter 32, dated April 2, 1963.[4]
  • 2 December 1994, the sanitation of democracy was upgraded to Prachathipat Sub-district Municipality announced in the Government Gazette, Volume 111, Section 94, dated November 2, 1994.[5]
  • 2 May 2003, Prachathipat Subdistrict Municipality was established as Mueang Municipality and changed its name to Rangsit Municipality The establishment and name change is in accordance with Royal Decree published in the Government Gazette, Volume 120, Section 36, dated May 1, 2003.[6]
  • 29 April 2011, the Ministry of Interior has upgraded the Rangsit Municipality to be Rangsit Municipality announced in the Government Gazette, Volume 128, Special Section 61, dated June 1, 2011.[7]

Rangsit City Municipality has an administrative area that covers the entire Tambon Prachathipat, covering an area of ​​20.80 square kilometers and bordering the following local administrative organizations:

The municipality is predominantly a lowland area. A Rangsit Prayoonsak canal runs through the center. The area is divided into two sections, Khlong Rangsit on the north and Khlong Rangsit on the south. Since 1890, King Chulalongkorn has had the idea of digging this canal, which is separated from the Chao Phraya River at Tambon Ban Mai. Canals run approximately 38.4 kilometers from Pathum Thani district to Ongkharak district in Nakhon Nayok province. Three canals on Soi 14 in Rangsit municipality are used to deliver water for agricultural and transportation purposes.

Climate[edit]

The climate is similar to that of the general provinces in the central region, with three seasons, the first of which is summer, which lasts from March to May. The rainy season lasts from June to October, and the winter lasts from November to February. Throughout the year, the average temperature ranges between 28 and 29 degrees Celsius.

Symbol[edit]

Rangsit Municipality's emblem is a circular shape containing the phrases "Rangsit Municipality" and "Pathum Thani Province" Rice shape, boat noodles, and lotus flower image. The rice ears symbolize the abundance of water in the Rangsit Canal. Boat noodles represent the Khlong Rangsit way of life. The lotus flower image has been associated with Rangsit Canal since ancient times. Furthermore, shadows of indigenous Pathum Thani animals that have been found in the area of Thung Rangsit in the past and some extinct species such as Schomburgk's deer, wild elephant, wild buffalo, and tiger descend from the Khao Yai forest in search of food to feed the area are shown below. Rangsit's surrounding prairie Thung Luang and Thung Rangsit were later names for this area. Currently, it also includes the municipality of Tha Khong in Khlong Luang District and Nong Suea District.

Population[edit]

Rangsit City Municipality has a total population of 84,268 people, with 39,105 males and 45,163 females, with a population density of 4,051.35 people per square kilometer. Most of the population has a mixed occupation of agriculture, Industry, Service, and Commerce. At the present, the industrial, commercial, and service sectors are expanding rapidly decreasing people's interest in the agriculture industry.

In that religion, Rangsit City has 3 temples, namely Wat Saeng San, Wat Khlong Nueng, and Wat Chanthasuk.

Transportation[edit]

Rangsit municipality has 41 roads totaling 53,670 meters in length. Most people use the road as a means of transportation. Rangsit municipality's main roads include Phahonyothin Road, Rangsit-Nakhon Nayok Road (Thor Lor.305), Rangsit-Pathum Thani Road (Thor Lor.346), and Leap Khlong Sam Road (Road 67, Rangsit-Nakhon Nayok). Waterways are the next transportation. Which was once an important transportation route. There is currently some water transportation for contacting within Rangsit and surrounding areas. Khlong Rangsit Prayoonsak, Khlong Nueng, Khlong Song, and Khlong Sam are all important waterways. As for the railway, you can take a train from Bangkok Railway Station to Rangsit Railway Station. The State Railway of Thailand open the Red Line suburban train service on August 2, 2021. Bang Sue - Rangsit section for residents of Rangsit Municipality and surrounding areas in which they can use the train to travel directly to the heart of Bangkok by selecting the service on the third floor of the State Railway of Thailand, which is the Red Line platform as well.
