Ivan Antonovich (real patronymic Antipovich) Yefremov (Russian: Ива́н Анто́нович (Анти́пович) Ефре́мов; 22 April [O.S. 9 April] 1908 – 5 October, 1972), last name sometimes spelled Efremov, was a Soviet paleontologist, science fiction author and social thinker. He originated taphonomy, the study of fossilization patterns.

Biography[edit]

Ancestry[edit]

Yefremov's father, Antip Kharitonovich, was born in 1861 in Makaryevskiy Uyezd of Nizhny Novgorod Governorate into a family of Old Believers.[1] In 1882, he was conscripted and sent to serve in the Semyonovsky Regiment in Saint Petersburg, where he was eventually promoted to a non-commissioned officer. After 16 years of service, he retired and was granted the position of a collegiate registrar, the lowest class in the Russian Table of Ranks.[2] Soon thereafter, Antip Kharitonovich moved to Vyritsa, where he built a house and rented a saw mill on the Oredezh River from the local landowner. With the construction boom in Saint Petersburg and the opening of a railway line to Vyritsa, this quickly proved to be a very profitable enterprise, which facilitated Antip Kharitonovich's acceptance into the Merchant Guild.
