David Grusch page extended protection

Hi I saw that you had added extended protection to David Grusch page. the protection level is extreme. there are many recent revelations that are not covered in the article and the fact that a very tiny number off people can only edit and even the talk page is semi protected, has caused this article to be out of date and inaccurate. I wanted to ask that you change the protection level in the main article. MatthewKulinsky (talk) 17:49, 18 January 2024 (UTC)

I guess it's always possible to go back to extended protection if there was an incident. MatthewKulinsky (talk) 17:51, 18 January 2024 (UTC)

Full protection of Brianna Wu

I noticed you indefinitely full-protected Brianna Wu in June of last year. I was surprised that it would be subject to this level of protection indefinitely, even considering that this is obviously a high-profile and controversial article that is often vandalized and is subject to arbitration remedies. Can you explain why it has been necessary to prevent any non-admin from editing this page for over six months straight, and if there is any plan to lower the level of protection in the foreseeable future? IntoThinAir (talk) 14:54, 23 January 2024 (UTC)

I suspect the reasoning is not clear to a non-admin (and perhaps at this point not even to a non-oversighter) as there are literally 400+ deleted revisions of absolute crap, much of it put in by extended confirmed accounts -- some where even their usernames had to be oversighted. (NB: Not an oversighter currently, but I saw a good bit of the filth before it was zapped.) It was so much nonsense I used selective deletion and restore over revdel just to avoid making the article history unusable with deleted revisions. So, no, at this point in time I don't really plan on lowering the protection at any defined point in the future, which is why it is set to not expire. Courcelles (talk) 14:22, 25 January 2024 (UTC)

Restore my user rights

I see that you have removed my user rights 6 months ago. Well, now, I would those user rights (page mover, new page reviewer, pending changes reviewer, rollbacker and template editor) back please, as I plan to be using them again in 2024. So, could you please restore them? GeoffreyT2000 (talk) 15:34, 26 January 2024 (UTC)

All done. Happy to do whatever you want, but in the future, the only one you hold that's really worth considering removing for temporary inactivity would be template editor. Courcelles (talk) 15:37, 26 January 2024 (UTC)

Can't remember the exact SPI investigation

Hi, sorry for the message if this is inappropraite - while checking User talk:ސްސްޕައެވެ އެރޖަރ, I remembered seeing an SPI where accounts were created, talk pages got a sentence or two of Japanese text in the edit summaries, and were then blocked. The name according to Google translate is "User:Sspae Erja" - is there the chance this is the Japanese LTA that creates accounts with names related to Asperger's syndrome? "އޭއެސްޕަރޖަރ އެވެ" / "eyesparjar eve" is "Asperger's" in Dhivehi. Apologies again if this is barking up the wrong tree, but the name 100% raised an eyebrow. Schrödinger's jellyfish 02:50, 28 January 2024 (UTC)

SPI, not SPI investigation. A good old chai tea moment, oops. Schrödinger's jellyfish 02:51, 28 January 2024 (UTC)
@Schrödinger's jellyfish, looks like @Spicy got them. Good catch, and the exact Japanese characters are reproduced in the block notice saving me trying to find it on a phone! Courcelles (talk) 20:25, 28 January 2024 (UTC)

I assume, based on the 8-second time difference, this has to be the equivalent of an edit conflict, and not intended as an actual modification of my block to restore talk page access. Lately I've been proactively removing talk page access of 100% obvious VOAs. Zero point zero zero zero percent chance of a legit unblock request. Saves the time of the small group of admins who actually review unblock requests, so they can look at more useful requests. --Floquenbeam (talk) 18:21, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

LOL. we keep tripping over each other. Floquenbeam (talk) 18:21, 6 February 2024 (UTC)
@Floquenbeam, I'd already fixed it before seeing this, so, yeah, it was "two people reaching for the block button at the same time", not an intentional change! :D Courcelles (talk) 18:22, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

Check user procedure question

Hey, I've never dealt with the checkuser side of the project previously. I've come across Draft:Before Shit Got Weird (The Cool Kids Album) and saw that the submitting user was CU blocked. Reminded me of the revision you made here. I was curious now because that looped in the now archived ANI discussion because of the topic overlap and the focus on my user page. Now I'm curious, if because of the overlapping edit history, could I raise the latter user at WP:SPI? I wasn't sure because normally when I click on a user that has been CU blocked, I see a suspected/confirmed SP category but nothing on the former user's userpage. But the first editor has already been CU blocked.

Is it worth editor and admin time to submit a SPI request based on the above?

Appreciate the guidance. microbiologyMarcus (petri dish·growths) 18:48, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

That's a sockpuppet. Blocked them and a sleeper. Courcelles (talk) 18:54, 6 February 2024 (UTC)

WikiCup 2024 February newsletter

The 2024 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with 135 participants. This is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2017.

Our current leader is newcomer Generalissima (submissions), who has one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher) and 10 GAs and 12 DYKs mostly on New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures. Here are some more noteworthy scorers:

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges (Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs), Epicgenius (talk · contribs), and Frostly (talk · contribs)) are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. This IP appears to be a WP:LOUTSOCK of the case which you previously CU'd. There is a consistent pattern of bulk edits on the page Portal: Current Events involving linking and formatting, following a distinctive style matching previous socks (X2023X: 1, 2, 3 , Jim Michael 2: 1, 2, 3). Could you please look into this and take appropriate measures? 33ABGirl (talk) 16:27, 12 February 2024 (UTC)

battle sockers

Hi, thanks for quickly handling Darkl1yy case, I wanted to ask this one here because can't really connect the dots for a new case.

This article was previously deleted as being created by a sock (User:NormalguyfromUK): [38] it was re-created by Baey123 on 1 Feb here, and then within 1 day on trwiki by Efe urluca: [39] I don't think that's just a coincidence. Baey123 could be a block evasion sock of someone? There is also User:Silveresc, blocked as sock of User:ArsenalAtletico2017 which could be related looking at this wikidata history: [40] and also some others, for example, Silveresc creates the wikidata items [41] [42] and Baey123 creates the articles [43] [44] (this one was previously created by another sock of ArsenalAtletico2017 and deleted before looking at here: [45]) Tehonk (talk) 02:16, 16 February 2024 (UTC)

WikiCup 2024 March newsletter

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.

The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:

In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.

Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Block Evasion again.

In light of this previous discussion with you, I again wanted to draw your attention to Draft:The Chenab Times. It seems User:Anzer Ayoob Aka User:TheChunky has come back again to promote his spamy Kashmiri news portal, The Chenab Times, but now appears to use a Philippine proxy with User:Augum. Regards. Maliner (talk) 05:25, 5 March 2024 (UTC)

Let's see if a block and a semiprotection cut down on this nonsense. Courcelles (talk) 13:11, 5 March 2024 (UTC)
Thanks, Courcelles, for being so helpful once again. Seeing the abuse and repeated block evasion to promote The Chenab Times. I am rejecting that spam. Regards. Maliner (talk) 14:32, 5 March 2024 (UTC)
Sometimes I wonder if G13 should have a mechanism to exclude sockpuppet edits as "resetting the clock" so we could delete drafts like this... but it would take more community time to propose and enforce than it would ever be worth. Courcelles (talk) 14:45, 5 March 2024 (UTC)
I agree with you 💯 percent. Regards. Maliner (talk) 14:50, 5 March 2024 (UTC)
