Augustus[edit]

Welcome to Wikipedia, and thank you for your correction to the Augustus article. Because Wikipedia articles are often worked on by large numbers of people, we don't sign individual contributions (although anyone can see from the page history which users have edited an article). The principle of collaborative editing also means that if you'd like to correct an error, you should edit the text that's already there rather than append a separate correction. If you aren't sure how best to integrate a correction into the article, you can bring it to the attention of other editors on the talk page (e.g., Talk:Augustus).

Since the state of Maryland declared him a deadbeat dad in the case Stern v. Stern, is it proper to cite that neutral third party source as the source? Did the court issue an opinion stating that he was "a deadbeat dad" or did it merely order him to pay child support for which he was in arrears. If you are intent on including this material, cite the case and quote the court without making a personal characterization of the court's language. The facts will speak for themselves. Also, we typically put details of a subjects personal life in a separate section, even if those details are considered scandalous. The court ruling calls him a deadbeat dad (I had some trouble correctly making the link here to Wiki entry) and ordered him to pay an extra year of child support for his children. In Maryland the normal age of adulthood is 18, but Richard Stern was required to pay an additional year (to 19) as a punishment. This was a very unusual punishment, and the only time I have heard it applied.

While editing any article or a wikipage, on the top of the edit window you will see a toolbar which says "cite" click on it

Choose the most appropriate template and fill in the details beside a magnifying glass followed by clicking said button,
If the article is available in Pubmed Central, you have to add the pmc parameter manually -- click on "show additional fields" in the template and you will see the "pmc" field. Please add just the number and don't include "PMC".

Cool! Well we always need subject-matter experts. Sorry that this was your initial experience, and I hope I can guide you. Basically, we need inline citations for all statements, to a specific secondary source. Help:Referencing for beginners may help explain how to use the <ref> tags to generate inline citations. If that's unfamiliar to you, you can just use parenthetical citations. And then, put all the sources at the bottom. The best method to do this is called {{Cite book}}, but that's a bit complicated, so you can use simple text (author, title, isbn) to cite the source instead. All that matters is someone else can verify what you wrote. Especially for ancient history, it's important we only use the writing of modern scholars.
