Adminship[edit]

Thank you for nominating me. I shall do my best. -- AllyUnion (talk) 08:20, 11 Dec 2004 (UTC)

In the template, Mary Russell appears, but I don't think she's in a Conan-Doyle book. Is this deliberate? Because you said that we shouldn't put the Exploits in because they weren't ACD, so what about her? I won't touch it until I get your more expert advice though.--Honeycake 08:35, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Yep, good idea. But how will we ever get together all the non-ACD stories? There must be hundreds and hundreds that no WP user has ever heard of. Also, thanks for the link!! Finally, just out of personal curiosity, are you an admin?--[[User:Honeycake|Honeycake (please reply on my talkpage!!)]] 11:33, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)

New SH template[edit]

I've created a Template:Holmes infobox, and to make it work, you type the following at the top of the page:

{{holmes infobox|name of story|date of release|book (eg His Last Bow)|client|set in (date)|villain}} and it does it all for you. I have put an example below, that's not a real story, obviously.

"The Adventure of the Exotic Poison"
Short story by {{{author}}}
Publication
Published inThe Scrap-Book of Sherlock Holmes
Publication date2004

Changing a bit 'o settings here...[edit]

Hi!

It has been just a few minutes since you sent me a welcome message and I have already screwed up. :) Well it's not that bad - I have changed the language of interface on my Preferences page to slovenian (I'm from Slovenia) but the software seems to have a bug and I get some nasty error if I try to return to Preferences. I have already posted a message to bugzilla, but in the meantime it would be nice to have my preferences back... so could you please change the language setting of my account back to english if it's in your power to do so?

Thanks in advance!

Bond actors[edit]

The templates you've been putting up on individual actor pages as well as the film pages are really not needed. One problem is that some of these actors have appeared in more than one James Bond film. Walter Gotell for instance has been in seven films. The articles already mention the films too. I really don't see why these are necessary at all. K1Bond007 21:43, Jan 2, 2005 (UTC)

Re

Sure that'd be useful, but thats more for a fan site, not Wikipedia. If you do this for Bond, you'd have to do this for ALL films. On the actors article it specifically states what films their in. On the film page it specifically states what actors are in it. Theres really no need for this - at least for Wikipedia. Theres already a "James Bond actors" category anyway. A compromise would be to list the templates on the category page instead. K1Bond007 19:46, Jan 3, 2005 (UTC)
The more I think about this, the more I don't agree. It just doesn't seem right for Wikipedia. Theres absolutely no need for these when a category for actors already exists. If you were to make sub-categories of the cat "James Bond actors" with films like Dr. No actors etc instead or what I said previously, I wouldn't object. Actors that make a lot of appearances, Judi Dench, Walter Gotell, Brosnan etc would remain under James Bond actors. I'm giving you fair warning that I'm planning on removing these templates from the actors pages in the near future, unless you gather some sort of support for it. K1Bond007 23:43, Jan 3, 2005 (UTC)
I don't know if theres really a solution required for this situation. The names of the actors are all in a category already, they're already mentioned on the film pages and on their respective articles the films are mentioned. There really doesn't need to be much more than that. By the way, the Bond girl category is not just a category for actresses in a Bond film. This is different. See Bond girl. Call for AMA election[edit]

AMA Member Advocate,

There's a poll currently in the AMA Homepage about making a new AMA Coordinator election. Please, cast your vote there (though it's not mandatory). Any comments you have about this, write it on the AMA Homepage talk page. Cheers, --Neigel von Teighen 18:43, 4 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Proposals for AMA Membership Meeting[edit]

As AMA Coordinator I am requesting that suggestions be placed on Wikipedia:AMA Membership Meeting plans for our first membership meeting, to be held in the near future, (hopefully before any election occurs.) Since we have never had any kind of "official" meeting we need to discuss how this will occur (i.e. Wiki pages or IRC channel), how it will be structured (i.e. meeting agenda) and if there will be any "chair" to supervise the meeting and meeting "secretary" to write up minutes or keep some kind of official record of what transpires. Thanks in advance for your input and your continued work as an advocate. — © Alex756 19:49, 5 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Re: Blocking[edit]

There's only the block log to find blocked vandals/individuals. At least that's the only place I know, it would be quite nice to get some automated message that tells you that the userpage you are just watching has been blocked. I don't know if the blocking times add up to each other, but I don't think so, that wouldn't make too much sense (At least I can't think of a situation where it would make sense). I've often seen some vandal being blocked twice by two admins in the block log, so I think that isn't that much of a problem. :) Cheers. --Conti| 23:53, Jan 5, 2005 (UTC)

John, thank you for your response to the survey request above. I was intrigued by your response that you had not advocated "officially" and I was wondering what do you mean by that, as there has been a lot of "informal" advocacy which is very relevant to our organization's goals. I would consider that things like giving people information, providing them some better understanding of the dispute resolution process or even stepping in and trying to help someone on one side of a dispute when you see that they can't articulate their position quite well and it has some merit. If you could be more specific, that would help me in my report to the membership. Thanks. — © Alex756 01:11, 25 Jan 2005 (UTC)

New template for Adventures of SH Template:SH-adv[edit]

Well, I've added a new template, just for the Adventures as a first step towards replacing the one that was deleted by TfD. It's not as useful as having all the links on one template, but it's better than nothing. Please take a look at it and let me know what you think. I'd like your suggestions before I go on to make others for Memoirs etc.

BTW it's a shame that TfD is dominated by a handful of people with a grudge against large, useful navigational templates, and want to see them all replaced by smaller, incomplete, less useful ones. And for some of the more fanatical members, even that's not enough; they want to remove all navigational templates and force everyone to only use Categories to find related articles! Maybe lovers of big templates should mobilise ourselves and make a permanent presence on TfD to argue against deleting them? Otherwise, this is just the thin end of the wedge! problem with Ireland[edit]

You might be interested in Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Log/2005 April 30. I am proposing that we rename the category Elections in the Republic of Ireland because the republic was only declared in 1949 and it leaves every election before then in a limbo. Some users want to put everything before then in there anyway, even though the name is wrong. Others suggest creating separate names for every Irish state, so you'd have Elections in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, Elections in the Irish Republic (1919-1921), Elections in Southern Ireland (1921-1922) , Elections in the Irish Free State (1922-1937), Elections in Éire (1937-1949) AAAAGH! It would be a tangled mess, with some elections belonging potentially in 3 categories. I fighting a losing battle there to try to make them see sense. (They already decided previously to delete Elections in Ireland!!!) They clearly know very little about Ireland. One individual even is convinced it is a conspiracy in some way to attack Northern Ireland on wikipedia!!! (His evidence, my username is in green and orange! I kid you not!) Some sane Irish contributions from people who know what they are talking about would be a help! FearÉIREANN 22:40, 2 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Human Rights Servey on Wikipedia (The final post of I_sterbinski)[edit]

Dear all,
Wikipedia was recently a subject of intensive research of an huge international human right organization. A team of people from different nationalities and ages were acting on Wikipedia for 20 days, investigating previously noted anomalities of Wikipedia free editing and forming a final report, which (between the others similar reports) will later be a guide to all future moves of the organization concerning Wikipedia. Acting under an account of a real person, their privacy is to be held private. Therefore, very few private information will be revealed.
Also, this is a result of the lack of final possition of the organization concerning Wikipedia and human rights, which was still not formed.
The team's final post on Wikipedia, where they explain their actions can be found on the following addresses:

The team would like to thank to all the persons who took part in the correspondence with us.
We also want to appologise for keeping our identity secret for a longer period.
Best regards,

Hi, this is a circular to Wikipedians in Ireland to draw your attention to Wikimedia UK, where the establishment of a local Wikimedia chapter for the United Kingdom (and possibly for the Republic of Ireland) is being discussed. See the talk page, as well as the mailing list; a meetup will take place to discuss matters in London in September, for anyone who can get there. On another topic, plans are being drawn up for a UK bid for Wikimania 2006, which would be conveniently close to Ireland. On the other hand, Dublin's bid was one of the final three last year - might we bid again? --Kwekubo 04:14, 31 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
