This is very strange and worrying. I did not make these changes. They have been done by somebody else, who has managed to use my signiture (I have no idea how), and this is a sort of vandalism. I think I know what it was actually happend. I have edited, by mistake, a previous version of an article by User talk:Doublea (before it was corrected by you) adding to it only some stuff to the "Quotations" area. Bette Davis

Hi Orbicle. I've been thinking that I should not have reverted the trivia sections without actually fixing the problem. I was a bit hasty (trivia sections are my pet hate, but that's my problem). To answer your question about what to do when people add trivia to the body of the article : the simple answer is to remove the information if it is not relevant. If it is relevant and the problem is that it was badly worded or inappropriately placed, then rewrite and replace it. This was my error with the Bette Davis comments. I could easily have reworded them and placed them into a better context. I've been working on the article on and off over the last few months, but so far I've really only looked at the first half of it. I think it needs a section relating to her "legacy" ie what has happened since she died and how she is viewed. (see Vivien Leigh for a similar postscript). The bit about Spielberg retrieving her Oscar could go there. The bit about the "Bette Davis Eyes" single should go into the body of the article where the song is discussed but trimmed down slightly. It's a little too detailed. The Bette Midler reference doesn't really "belong" anywhere. Perhaps it could just be deleted. This is all just my opinion though. Maybe you could have a look at Wikipedia:Trivia and Wikipedia Talk:Trivia to see how other editors have viewed this situation. Rossrs 01:26, 29 July 2006 (UTC)

I've gone back over it. Moved the "Bette Davis Eyes" info into the body of the article, the Spielberg buying back her Oscar into the Awards and nominations section, removed the Midler and references in pop songs altogether. 1. The image referred to above Image:Ursula_Thiess.jpeg is a film star "cigarette card". I have put the promotional picture tag, but there is no equivalent category (such as Movie poster) in the licensing.

I don't seem to be able to put these two new categories so that they appear in the right place: Category:Films directed by George Stevens and Category:Films directed by Anatole Litvak, the latter appears under "F" and the former not at all. _ _ The the "low resolution terminology" is something i observed and adopted on LoPbN tree. I am now probably the most frequent maintainer of it, and AFAIK the only one who uses the term out loud, tho i think the practice is followed by all the frequent LoPbN contributors to a high degree.

_ _ Its purpose is inherant in the justification of the existence of LoPbN: the tree is a navigational device helping users find bio articles in two situations where they roughly know the name of the person they are looking for:

1. They don't have the exact spelling of the article title (or of a Rdr to it)
2. They aren't sure they have that, and choose to surf to the bio via an eyeball search ("it should be somewhere near this or the next thing i'll try ... ah, there it is") rather than by possibly repetitive typing.

More concretely, the entries must support the purpose by avoiding clutter: being terse except where additional detail is likely to contribute to speedy navigation. If two American politicians are commonly called by the same name, the dates of the one the reader is after may not, where they heard of her, have been clear enuf to distinguish them. Thus the situation calls for more info than "American politician", say

American politician -- Georgia

or

American politician -- Senate

(depending on whether the other one was also a Senator but from Vermont, or also from Georgia but in the Cabinet rather than ever being in Congress).

serves two purposes despite the lack of ambiguity in the name:

1. When some commentator emulates Adam Smith or Engelbert Humperdinck in adopting as pseudonym the name of a well-known figure of a dead generation, we don't have to scramble to add info to the "real" Lenin's entry when a new editor adds the entry for the "imitator".
2. While probably nothing can keep some new editors from adding entries (or even expanding adequate existing entries) with phrases that include several verbs and maybe a relative pronoun, the simplicity, as in 90% of entries, of vital stats, passport-nationality, and life-role that provides notability, is so immeidately visible that setting that uniform minimum probably does forestall a lot of cluttered entries.

Re your #1,

1. "Why not?" More respectfully stated, modern dictionaries say an actor is "one who acts" without specifying males, nor even adding "especially males".
2. The term "actress" reflects several traditions: that female parts be played by boys, that no women but a slut would venture onto a stage, and (more modernly) that actresses are "starlets" (no masculine equivalent) who get glamour and better-than-working-class conditions in return for providing studio execs with the perquisites of the casting couch, and that actresses don't have too act, but only to look attractive, and once they're less attractive than the current crop of starlets, acting skill is insufficient to sustain their careers. Any female actor today who's willing to make waves describes herself as an actor, drawing attention to her skills in contrast to any assumption she's a mere starlet. Calling her an actor can be intended as flattery, but it is always accurate so there should be no presumption of PoV. Calling her an actress may be offensive, and is confusing bcz it leaves it unclear whether low skill and/or victimhood are being implicitly stated.
3. Using "actress" rather than "actor" is not significant clutter, but it does invite the impresssion that "female wrestler", "female boxer", "female [field -- and ice?] hockey player", "female pilot", "female soldier", "female murderer" and so on are improvements over the omission of gender. The only word i can think of, more worthless to navigation on LoPbN than "female" (or male) is "professional", since 50% of possible people are ruled out by "female", while "professional" only helps you rule out a few percent of notable people. (In contrast, it is quite valuable to label a (notable) amateur scientist as such: those seeking them are thereby help in distinguishing them from a large number of professionals, a few of whom might share the same name.) Even "American", "Chinese", and "Indian" rule out a lot of people; "female" (or "male") are too nondescript to be justify their contribution to clutter, even for the people whose gender isn't obvious from their names.

I'm not sure how much significance the potential for offense should be given, but the tendancy of "actress" to encourage adding "female" for other professions (and male before, e.g., "nurse") is quite sufficient reason for removing it.

The fair use of any image is not self evident but must be supported. The image was not discussed in the article, there was no image caption, and no fair use rationale on the image description page - it was completely unsupported. It was just sitting there in the middle of the article. TIME covers are used only in exceptional circumstances because TIME still uses these images for sale. They're probably more likely to exercise their rights than some other copyright holders who don't actively sell their images. Who knows? The tag you added to the image reads in part that the image could be used "to illustrate an article, or part of an article, which specifically describes the issue in question or its cover", but it didn't. I grow increasingly weary of editors who disregard Wikipedia's policies, but think that if someone brings it to their attention, they have the right to respond in a rude manner for no reason other than that they disagree. It's also unfortunate that instead of limiting your discussion to the issue at hand, you chose to personalise this by making an assumption about my motives and commenting on your view of my shortcomings as an editor. I happened to come across your exchange with Rossers about the Clark Gable image that he deleted, so thought I might be able to help. I scanned an autographed 8X10 glossy I own, and reworked it a bit after scanning it. It's now my own creation, which I freely licensed to wiki. If, for whatever reason, they delete that one, too, I will take a screenshot from the trailer for Gone With The Wind. That I know is allowed. God, some people can be tight asses, can't they? I find it astonishing that through the minefield of copyright restrictions in Wikipedia, there is so little opportunity for people to take a step back, use their common sense and think. We are dealing here with film stars who have left a legacy of a zillion photographs, promotional pictures, film lobby cards, posed photos, candid shots, posters, films, interviews etc but because of the lurking vigilantes the articles about them are usually reduced to having blurry, out of focus photos. The pic in question, Rossrs, was one I bought at auction. It is an autographed 8X10 glossy, presumably taken by MGM in the very early 30s. I cropped it. I horozontally mirrored it. I added sepia tones. I angled it. I added extra pixles. I added blue tones. I added red tones. In short, I took an image of a dead person and made it a creation of my own, which I then freely licensed to Wiki out of the goodness of my heart. If this still does not satisfy the Wiki Brownshirts who are currently running rampant on this site, then by all means delete it and I will take a screenshot from the theatrical trailer of Gone With The Wind. And you're right, of course. Movie stars (and their estates) make it their business to get their image out in front of the public every chance they have. They have a vested interest in accruing as much publicity as possible; and the use of an image on a site like Wiki is almost sure to go uncontested, in that it stimulates interest in the person in question, and potentially causes readers to go out and buy more of the subject's product.
