Internet Archive Scholar vs. JSTOR

Hello, I see on your user page that you use JSTOR and I'd like to know more about your experience. By my calculations, a good 70 % of the main JSTOR content is now available for everyone at Internet Archive Scholar, with full text search provided e.g. at https://scholar.archive.org/ . The service is still in beta, but I've used it for some source-finding and it seems quite usable to me; I wonder whether that's just my experience. If you have a chance, the next time you'd be looking for a source on Google Scholar or JSTOR or similar, to perform the same search on IA scholar instead, I'd be curious to hear how it ends up. I have been trying to use the internet scholar archive and at least until now I am not satisfied. First it didn't have two papers I was looking for, then I had to download a paper to be able to read it. All this issues I do not have with JSTOR, where I can just read the article as a PDF. But, thank you anyways, it gave me the idea to search per scholar not only per article or topic, which BTW also works pretty good on JSTOR.Paradise Chronicle (talk) 20:39, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
Thanks, interesting. When you say that you "had to download" the paper, do you mean that you clicked the link from IA scholar and it didn't load in your browser, but it was saved locally and then you opened it outside your browser? I wonder whether that's a configurable behaviour. But you're right: there isn't a single display method, because some things (like microfilm scans) are only shown in the web viewer, while most of the OA articles archived from elsewhere are only available as PDF files. I know that the lead time for a special occasion is a factor so I worked pretty fast. Right now there is a debate about the image and whether it can be used. The consensus seems to be no. Under the current copyright status it is also to me not good enough. The flag was created recently (in terms of copyright status) and as to my understanding then either the copyright owner needs to publish it into commons (with the knowledge of the commons organism) which this flag was not. Your argument that it flew from Government buildings might work, but only for the flying flags from the flagpole of the Government building and not for the flag itself. Copyright is difficult, I have also had to learn. Hello Paradise Chronicle. I've realized that you've undone my edit in Sivas. I would like to resolve this issue.

WP:PLACE states that "The title can be allowed in the first line by a list of alternative names in parentheses, e.g.: Gulf of Finland" and that "Relevant foreign language names (one used by at least 10% of sources in the English language or that is used by a group of people which used to inhabit this geographical place) are permitted".

However, this is not needed when "Alternatively, all alternative names can be listed and explained in a "Names" or "Etymology" section immediately following the lead, or a special paragraph of the lead".

This article has a "Name" section, so there is no need to repeat these in the lead.

I saw your rationale WP:Place but in the case of Turkey, the place names have not evolved voluntarily or because they were no longer in use, but forced Turkification, therefore many place names in Greek, Armenian, or Kurdish etc. are actually still in use. Then also in the case of Sivas, the original name Sebasteia is the etymology for every Sebastian we know, which is probably something of the most interesting in the whole Sivas article for the average wikipedia reader. I mean the redirect Sebasteria leads to Sivas and if the average reader thinks they were mislead because they didn't get to the end of the lead. Similar it goes with other Turkish place names that have other place names in other languages right after the bold name. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 19:53, 17 September 2022 (UTC)
Hello again PC, I understand that you are upset over the Turkification of city names, but unfortunately WP:PLACE holds that when there's a "Name" or "Etymology" section in the article, there is no need to repeat the translations which are mentioned in the section, in the lead.
As for your concerns over people thinking they have been redirected to the wrong article, this is highly unlikely as in this case, Sebastia is used only for Sivas. No one can be confused at such a thing if they're searching with that name, as they are aiming to search for the city - and like you know, there's only names Sebastia. And this shouldn't even be an issue because the translations are mentioned right after the lead in the Etymology/Name section, as is required by WP:PLACE. It's not like the translations are deep in the article in some random place.
I suggest that you add the translations in the lead which are not mentioned in the "Name" section to said section. Then, the translations can be removed from the lead, as is WP guidelines. Thanks for your reply. TheMiddleMan69 (talk) 20:01, 17 September 2022 (UTC)
From WP:PLACE This page in a nutshell: Use modern English names for titles and in articles. Historical names or names in other languages can be used in the lead if they are frequently used and important enough to be valuable to readers, and should be used in articles with caution.
Answer from me:
If the place name is in use by historians and other scholars and/or the/its population it is a valuable information for the reader. I suggest we go locality by locality as explained before, many place names are still in use, well known or of importance for the former or current population. WP:PLACE: "Relevant foreign language names (one used by at least 10% of sources in the English language or that is used by a group of people which used to inhabit this geographical place) are permitted. Local official names should be listed before other alternate names if they differ from a widely accepted English name."
Right after this paragraph it states:
"Alternatively, all alternative names can be listed and explained in a "Names" or "Etymology" section immediately following the lead, or a special paragraph of the lead; it is recommended to have such a section if there are at least three alternate names, or there is something notable about the names themselves."

I've just checked the Sivas article and there's nothing to transfer to the "Name" section of the article, the Greek and Kurdish names of the city are already mentioned there, and I will add that the city is called the same in Latin & Greek, as is stated in the lead. But I won't suggest it, as removing an alternate name whose redirect leads to the page doesn't seem logic. See WP:POFR which is also a guideline. The example for alternate name is Pelé who's full name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento which is also mentioned in the lead apart of the section Early life where on the name is expanded in several phrases. You seem to solely focus on the very short summary of the article without reading the relevant details within it (which I've outlined to you). WP:POFR states "Alternative names redirect to the most appropriate article title"; said redirects in Sivas are already stated in the "Name" section of the article, nowhere in WP:POFR does it state that the alternative names (which have been turned into a redirect) must be stated in the lead.
See Thessaloniki as a prominent example; since the Turkish name is mentioned in the "Names and etymology" section of the article, it is not allowed into the lead, despite "Selanik" also redirecting to the page. But WP:PLACE does not prohibit the inclusion of other languages in the lead it actually shows examples how to do it.
The lead: The title can be followed in the first line by a list of alternative names in parentheses, e.g.: Gulf of Finland (Estonian: Soome laht; Finnish: Suomenlahti; Russian: Финский залив, Finskiy zaliv; Swedish: Finska viken) is a large bay in the easternmost arm of the Baltic Sea.
Relevant foreign language names (one used by at least 10% of sources in the English language or that is used by a group of people which used to inhabit this geographical place) are permitted.
Other relevant language names may appear in alphabetic order of their respective languages – i.e., (Estonian: Soome laht; Finnish: Suomenlahti; Russian: Финский залив, Finskiy zaliv; Swedish: Finska viken). Separate languages should be separated by semicolons.
Where there is such a section (Name Section), the article's first line should have only a link to the section, phrased, for example: "(known also by several alternative names)". When there are several significant alternate names, the case for mentioning the names prominently is at least as strong as with two.

Accidentally deleted talk page

Hi, I accidentally deleted the entirety of my talk page. Let's discuss here

I have a hard time understanding why it concerns a few people so much that the modern location of the place a person was born/died in is mentioned in their infoboxes. This has been done since the start of Wikipedia and is supported by most people - as evidenced by all the "modern-day, present-day, now" etc. in the infoboxes of people. For example, no one is saying that a person's a Turk because the place they were born in turns out to be located in modern-day Turkey. It is simply an informative addition - an interesting and much-needed one, which may lead people to research more on a person and subsequently e.g. find out where their resting place is.

Just thought about explaining you how to restore your talk page:). I guess it is better to go a forum where to discuss this, but for me it is also not correct. It remembers me of the Turkish History Thesis that claimed Greeks and most other cultures have a Turkish origin which is simply not the case. But we might both be wrong and you are right. Rest assured that I'm not involved in any of these theories. My only goal is to mention the modern place of which a person was born/died in - doesn't matter which country.
