March 2024[edit]

Information icon Hello, I'm Yeeno. I noticed that you made an edit concerning content related to a living (or recently deceased) person on Sarah Chen, but you didn't support your changes with a citation to a reliable source. It's been removed and archived in the page history for now. Wikipedia has a very strict policy concerning how we write about living people, so please help us keep such articles accurate and clear. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you! Yeeno (talk) 20:38, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I revised the edits to include citations and to maintain neutrality. Thank you. Sc2327 (talk) 23:45, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
While I appreciate your efforts to improve the page, please note that YouTube links are not a reliable source. I advise you go over Help:Referencing for beginners before continuing any further, as improperly sourced content is subject to removal per the Biographies of living persons policy. Thanks, Yeeno (talk) 04:48, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the feedback. So far the first-hand sources (i.e., interviews) I can find are often from YouTube. However, they must have come from an original source (such as the actual TV and radio interviews). I will work on finding the original sources and replacing the YouTube links as much as I can. Please give me some time to do this and do not roll back the page, as the content is based on interviews of Sarah Chen and her colleagues, not tabloids. I will be diligently working on finding the original sources. Sc2327 (talk) 15:49, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just an update and a question.
Update: I was able to find some references of greater reliability than the YouTube videos. These have been added. However, there's more work to be done to improve the reference sources, which I will continue doing. It's hard when you're writing about somebody active in the 1980s and early 1990s, before the internet time. I was actually surprised to find this much content, some are relatively recent uploads from the official TV stations that recorded Sarah Chen's earlier appearances. As much as I can, I cited the TV channels from which the videos came. Please bear with me as I continue with the editing. I do scientific writing as a career, so I appreciate the importance of proper references. Perhaps other Wiki users will help when there are obvious missing links.
Here is my question. In many places, a YouTube video is inserted for a specific song cited in the page. This is because I often cannot find the song on iTunes (from US). Can those links remain? I have no vested interest in those YouTube links (they are not mine), or Sarah Chen (I don't know her), or her music companies (no connection with me). But the music links are helpful in illustrating the points made. I can remove them if that's the policy of Wikipedia, or preferably keep them there to strengthen the page.
Finally, just want to say I appreciate your work on Wiki, and in guiding me through this process. When I first looked at Sarah Chen Wikipedia pages, her Chinese version is more comprehensive, whereas the English version has just a couple of paragraphs, which doesn't do justice to her enormous influence and contributions. I didn't simply translate the Chinese version because it seems stale, and because my research is much more extensive. I am going to do what I can to make the English version up to the standard of a Wiki biography. Thanks for your help! Sc2327 (talk) 18:02, 2 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sc2327: If the iTunes/YouTube links are not used to support specific information (e.g. a release date, concert appearance) as a footnote, they should not be included in the body per the External links guideline (i.e. links that look like this should not appear in the body). Linking to copyrighted content not uploaded by the copyright holder should also generally be avoided, unless it's a news report or interview that you cannot find anywhere else on the web.
I'm also noticing a lot of commentary/analysis, e.g. "crisp and steady vocals, showing her emerging talent" that aren't supported by secondary sources. You can include this if it was stated by a reviewer or critic, but if it's something you observed yourself, then it's original research, which isn't allowed on Wikipedia.
Another tip; if you want to link to pages on the Chinese Wikipedia, you can simply prefix the title with zh: in the link: for example, [[zh:陳淑樺|陳淑樺]] leads to 陳淑樺 on Chinese Wikipedia. There is also the {{ill}} template where you can include interwiki links as a part of the text.
Let me know if you have any other questions! Yeeno (talk) 21:41, 7 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for cleaning the page up. I like the changes you made. The flags you placed for references and original research gave me a better sense about what should or should not be part of the article. I will remove commentary/analysis that is not supported by references and add new or better references where appropriate. Sc2327 (talk) 12:14, 8 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Yeeno, I saw that the article on Sarah Chen that I contributed to was tagged as promotional. While I have tried to eliminate writing that sounds like commentary, I recognize that someone else may need to step in to further improve the tone of page to maintain neutrality.
But is there something further that I can do to help reduce the promotional label? Should the links to iTunes be removed? Please advise. Thanks. Sc2327 (talk) 13:25, 10 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Yeeno,
I have now made most of the edits for Sarah Chen's wiki page; I may still make minor changes to correct factual errors or typos. I would like to petition for your help, or the help of a wiki manager, to clean up the page, including the removal of the two red flags. I believe that proper references have been cited, and that the writing is fact-driven rather than promotional. I would be happy to help with references or improving neutral language, if those remain to be areas of concern. Thank you and I really appreciate the edits/help you've made.
