This page on the doc lacked any balance, potraying it as being universally loved. It was viewed in some quarters as moralistic finger waging tedium. Canadian director navboxes

Hi Shawn,

The Norman McLaren navbox looks great! Using a smaller font size for the parentheticals makes sense to me. I would, however, remove the co-directors; navboxes should only link to articles that are within the scope of the main article. Navboxes should also be transcluded on all linked articles, and I don't think that the Norman McLaren navbox should be transcluded on either of the co-director articles.

New Brunswick Articles without Reliable sources

Thank you for your interest. I started creating these articles and then someone noted that I should have some sort of link so I began including the coordinates for where I found the article on google maps (IE Villages, Roads etc.) That seemed to have been enough until now. The template I took is originally from another article in New Brunswick so I didn't see a problem until now. I have been persistent to include links to other Wikipedia articles for reliable sources. I don't know what else to do. Myself I am just looking on Google maps for most of my information and details.Hogie75 10:54, 12 July 2012 (UTC)

I actually had never used RSS (or Twitter really, for that matter) before we started working on this tool either (you don't need to have RSS feeds or a Twitter account already set up to use wikiFeed). Factual accuracy in the Thomas Fuller article

It's interesting that you noted the issues with building styles in the Thomas Fuller (architect) article on its talk page. In many articles about Canadian architects, I noticed such inaccuracies emerged when one user (Victoriaedwards) converted the basic vertical lists of works (in order of completion) into horizontal galleries, then vertical lists in a chart format. I've spent a lot of time overhauling these lists, but I haven't been able to get them all done. No one is perfect and this user has made countless good contributions, but she seemed to create a lot of these charts with obvious errors that could have been avoided by looking at the photos of the buildings and individual building articles. Even the "builder" chart heading is problematic, since architects don't necessarily construct the buildings they design. A.Roz (talk) 23:48, 13 August 2012 (UTC)

LOL Hi, Shawn. I am delighted to have your attention to the Category:Sexuality pages. They are very highly read, but only scantly edited.

Nonetheless, you took a page (Michael C. Seto) from my sandbox where I was working on it, and pasted it into the main encyclopedia.

I was very close to done, so there isn't much damage done, but I thought I should point this out to you. I included the no-index tag atop the page, but I rarely create new pages, and if there was something else I was supposed to do in order to isolate the page until it was completed, I'm not sure what that is.

Underpass Park is not really very close to the Gardiner Expressway and the underpasses that is is under actually relate to the on and off ramps between Adelaide Street East, Richmond Street East and the Don Valley Parkway. • You are correct, and had you asked, I would have responded that I made a mistake that I didn't realize until you pointed it out. The first was in the foreign language and I just plugged the url for the second into the translator without checking. As far as trying to improve things, I am trying to improve the project, not each and every article. If, during my checks prior to nominating, I find an article worth saving, I do what I can to do so. The Ars Technica award was for digital effects, not best film: so I just don't see this film ever meeting WP:NOTFILM, including, specifically, Wikipedia:NOTFILM#cite_note-3. Hello Shawn, I see that you provided useful supplemental information on the genetics reference that I posted on the article at issue, which I had lifted from a related article.

There is a group of people that seem intent on fostering believability in these false doctrines, and the genetics reference has been removed again.

I have posted another genetics reference on the Talk page, and will be supplementing that later, as I have now finished reading it.

  • Well, ya know, I gotta step in before my archnemesis Jackalope gets all the credit and glory — or something — but it can still be a pretty thankless task sometimes. Seriously, though: at least in the particular case of the Toronto Film Critics Awards, every article Category:Toronto Film Critics Association Awards that pertains to 2005 or before was created in January 2006 with the "year at the end" title format, which means they've been lingering like that for seven years already. They probably should be moved to "year in front" format instead, in accordance with Wikipedia conventions around the titling of other similar topics, but rightly or wrongly they just haven't been yet. The more recent ones are clearly just editors who may or may not be familiar with broader Wikipedia conventions maintaining the existing naming pattern in good faith, rather than anybody being deliberately obtuse. I couldn't speak to whether it's happening in other cases as well, but even if it is it would seem to me that it's nothing more than that eternal Wikipedia dilemma: our rules and conventions have evolved over time, but we still regularly catch all kinds of cases where older content still hasn't been updated accordingly (as well as all kinds of cases where people perpetuate the error by following the old outdated model instead of the new one.) Meredith House

Hi Shawn, happy 2013! Thank you for your message re Lady Meredith House. I must admit, I would have felt better had you messaged me before changing the picture again (this surely perpetuates a 'war' does it not?!) to say something along the lines of 'we notice you are very keen on the picture you originally posted', and then followed that with 'we prefer the better quality image and feel it ought to be changed, please state your case' etc.

My feeling is that it is a picture that was not rejected for poor quality when it was uploaded and therefore it ought not to be treated any differently to any of it's counterparts. The opening photograph of Ravenscrag in the GSM article hardly accentuates the house and it;'s masonry - but it is nostalgic, and that is the same feeling I was trying to convey with my choice of picture, rather than the stark stack of bricks on tarmac.

I fully appreciate that if this was the only photgraphic reference/image of the house on wikipedia, and it did not have it's own article, then my case would carry little weight. But, the other editor in question created it's own page. Yes, I edited the words on this article as much of the original information was incorrect, but no, I did not dream to alter the picture he/she had chosen as I would view it as only polite that the pictures available on wiki commons remain the personal choice of the creator. Of course wikipedia is free to be edited by all and anyone, but surely the focus is on the written/factual content, rather than conflicting personal artistic tastes?

I admit that I was remiss in not starting the caption below the original picture with a direct link to 'Lady Meredith House'. In my mind, I would have thought it common sense that if the reader of the GSM article was interested by the house and yet disappointed by the quality of the picture chosen in that article; with one obvious click below, they would be taken straight to the other editors specific article on the house with as many close up, detailed, quality pictures as they like - surely leaving the reader satisfied?

I am fully aware and in absolute support of wikipedia's ethos: No one person or group 'owns' the article. Our disagreement is not over expert opinion on the subject matter such as a date, name, or philosophy; this is merely one picture that was deemed acceptable to be uploaded and is independent to others on it's own subject page.

Way back in the mists of time, Jimbo created this article. Some doubted its notability, so it went to AfD, and there were some slightly snarky comments at AfD. Just a normal day on en.wikipedia really. Jaranda !voted delete, then Jimbo voted keep with a slight dig at the people who'd said delete, then Jaranda quit. Secret/Jaranda has in the past said he'd misused admin tools around this case but I don't know which tool was misused or where. Auto show photos

Regarding your comments in this thread: I checked a few photos; they were taken with a smartphone. The sensor ISO values recorded in the photos are pretty low and so it seems the camera software compensated by brightening the photos, which is what results in their white, foggy look. isaacl (talk) 03:18, 20 February 2013 (UTC)

    • Oh, for sure. Wikipedia Takes Montreal had the misfortune to take place last summer during one of the worst downpours in memory. The Commons was flooded -- pun intended -- with a number of poor quality images, taken by some brave souls during a veritable monsoon. I had some of the worst case photos deleted but came away from the process with an appreciation of just how poor an image has to be to be of 'no educational use.' Lots of small unpopulated New Brunswick categories

These New Brunswick categories are very small and the categories are only one article and unpopulated. Ok well I guess I have to talk through you instead of Steam5 as he told me not to talk to him for some reason. Anyway, all I was trying to do was understand why we couldn't have Towns that had people, buildings, roads etc that run through them included in this category. I have seen this for some towns in Canada and The United states. I am not talking about full categories of Buildings and Structures categories..etc. Just a place to put people who live there maybe. Also Why the speedy deletion, I am not the only one who has done this for towns in New Brunswick. Steam5 has even made some, IE: Shediac, New Brunswick Category. Bill Lishman's underground house

Hello!

I notice you've purged all content from my little stub on Bill Lishman's underground house. The reason why I want to keep this page separate from the main Bill Lishman article is that there would certainly be some people interested in this particular project in a way different from other Lishman's initiatives. (There are monographs written on such original individualized buildings, often with fantastic designs, which exist all over the world.) The stub can hopefully eventually be expanded into a full-fledged article with appropriate material. If you kill this baby in its craddle, none of that will happen. Hope you understand. Cheers! I'll actually try to expand it myself. I guess I just have a combination of interest in natural sciences and off-beat architecture, so I came to Bill Lishman's page via his work on bird migration and then saw the info on his house (I've never seen this house described from an artistic prospective in the literature or web-pages dealing with this type of constructions). So I think it's good to keep the page separate and try to collect some relevant info there (it seems unlikely that the architecture-oriented crowd will join in editing the main Bill Lishman page). About the Lambda (olive oil) page

Hi, big thanks for the helpful suggestions, I'm not very experienced with Wikipedia and your effort really helps.

However: 1. regarding the use of references: I find it really difficult to do a more thorough search than the company itself in order to find references that are not on the product's site (speironcompany.com), so how can I avoid to reference the same pages as the pop-ups there? 2. how to "unorphan" the page: maybe adding a link in Lambda under the "Lower-case letter λ" heading but I fear it would be deemed inappropriate / promotional. I would not like to add a link in the Olive oil page as no other products are linked from there. Any ideas you may have regarding the "orphan page" issue are welcome. Thank you for your time! I think it's a little presumptuous to assert I misunderstand notability. I think that where articles, like lambda, are edited in whole or largely by promotional or SPA editors, then the bar is raised in my mind for notability; if the subject were truly notable, why would it only be created/edited by promotional editors? The fact that it is, actually speaks against its notability, I would say, because noone unconnected with the product is editing it. Culture of Edmundston category nominated at CFD

Reclaiming the Blade is about the sword.
It's history, martial arts, military history, physics, sociology, culture... Yes it talks a lot about swords in movies (far too much, IMO. Even if you talk about swords in media/culture, movies are only one medium among many), but that is only part of it.

Feedback needed on using special characters

Hello. Thank you so much for using VisualEditor. Having editors use it is the best way for the Wikimedia Foundation to develop it into the best tool it can be.

While we always welcome general feedback (please report any issues in Bugzilla in the "VisualEditor" product or drop your feedback on the central feedback page on MediaWiki.org), the developers are especially interested right now in feedback on the special character inserter. This new tool is used for inserting special characters (including symbols like ₥, IPA pronunciation symbols, mathematics symbols, and characters with diacritics). It is intended to help people whose computers do not have good character inserters. For example, many Mac users prefer to use the extensive "Special Characters…" tool present at the bottom of the Edit menu in all applications or to learn the keyboard shortcuts for characters like ñ and ü.

The current version of the special characters tool in VisualEditor is very simple and very basic. It will be getting a lot of work in the coming weeks and months. It does not contain very many character sets at this time. (The specific character sets can be customized at each Wikipedia, so that each project could have a local version with the characters it wants.) But the developers want your ideas at this early stage about ways that the overall concept could be improved. I would appreciate your input on this question, so please try out the character inserter and tell me what changes to the design would (or would not!) best work for you.

The "insert" pulldown on the task bar of VisualEditor will lead you to the '⧼visualeditor-specialcharacterinspector-title⧽' tool.

This is the ⧼visualeditor-specialcharacterinspector-title⧽ inserter as it appears on many wikis. (Some may have customized it.) Your feedback on this tool is particularly important.

Issues you might consider:

• Do you normally use a character inserter? Which character sets are useful to you? Should it include all 18 of the character sets provided in the wikitext editor's newer toolbar at the English Wikipedia, the 10 present in the older editor toolbar, or some other combination of character sets?
• How many special characters would you like to see at one time?
  • Should there be a "priority" or "favorites" section for the 10 or 12 characters that most editors need most often? Is it okay if you need an extra click to go beyond the limited priority set?
  • How should the sections be split up? Should they be nested? Ordered?
  • How should the sections be navigated? Should there be a drop-down? A nested menu?
• The wikitext editor has never included many symbols and characters, like ℗ and ♀. Do you find that you need these missing characters? If the character inserter in VisualEditor includes hundreds or thousands of special characters, will it be overwhelming? How will you find the character you want? What should be done for users without enough space to display more than a few dozen characters?
• Should the character inserter be statically available until dismissed? Should it hover near the mouse? Should it go away on every selection or 10 seconds after a selection with no subsequent ones?
• Some people believe that the toolbar already has too many options—how would you simplify it?

The developers are open to any thoughts on how the special character inserter can best be developed, even if this requires significant changes.

Hello Shawn, As the creator of the article Vlad Feier I would like to answer very quick to some of your concerns. For sure this is not a "very spammy bio article" from the following reasons: this person is real person, it is a director nominated in Cannes in 2011, it is a person that can easily can be checked on IMDB, articles in newspapers or magazines. As interviews there is just one from realTVfilms made during the Cannes Film Festival. Other interviews I haven't found with him. I just found articles. Articles written by big newspapers or some of them small magazines. I found articles from Romania, some of them from Mexico, Chile and US. This are not just small articles in unknown publications. As well the reason why I wrote this article is because this person inspired me to start and develop my passion for film after I had the chance to listen his speech in 2011 at Cannes. As a beginner on Wikipedia for sure I admit this article has room to be improved but not to be deleted. And as well we should be more open to improve articles than delete them. For sure there are articles that doesn't belong on Wikipedia but some of them need just improvements. Thank you.

A Washington Post article can be payed and again the fact it is there doesn't have any legitimacy. Genie Awards

Given that we often cross paths on Canadian film articles, I wanted to ask if you'd be willing to participate in a cleanup project to get our Genie Award articles spruced up to contemporary Wikipedia standards. The articles have a lot of problems — missing information, 2005-vintage formatting, lack of referencing, etc. — and really need a concerted effort to get them up to scratch; I've already started working on them to an extent, but it's a big job that I can't really handle all by myself.

I've written up a basic overview of what needs to be done at Wikipedia:Canadian Wikipedians' notice board/Genies cleanup project, and I've tried drumming up some volunteers at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Film/Film awards task force#Project request. What I'd like, in particular, is to have two or three or four people concentrate mainly on fixing the formatting and the missing information, so that I can dedicate my attention to pulling actual referencing out of the newspaper databases that I have access to. (Of course, you can also add referencing too if you have access to suitable sources, but since not everybody does I'm willing to concentrate on that part if I can get assistance with the copy-paste part of the job.)

Almost all of the awards have had their exact wording of their name changed over the course of Genie Award history, but it would be incredibly silly to maintain separate lists for, frex, "Genie Award for Best Actor" vs. "Genie Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role". So I'd say you did fine there — we should keep common unified lists based on the substantive function of the award, and then document name changes in that common list, rather than spinning off separate lists for every individual change of the award's name. No, I don't see anything you're missing. I just don't see the point in tagging an article because of notability concerns; if the subject is not notable, then the article should be deleted; if the subject is notable, then the tag is unjustified. I would not be offended if you nominated the article for deletion. I think it should be kept simply because news outlets mention the related awards so often, although I would feel more comfortable with the article if we could find a source calling the festival a vanity festival or similar. What would you like to see happen with the article?

You're a busy guy, but, sometimes "thou doth protest too much" ;-)

My use of "2001" is not over-linking, as you stated. It reads like the contribution was made in the year 2001; not to the film 2001. That is why I changed it. And threats of declaring vandalism because you don't "get your way" is antagonistic.

• If you want me to be antagonistic, keep up the insults. You didn't just spell out the full name of the film, you linked to it. Even though it was linked in the sentence directly above: that is WP:OVERLINK. And would you please undo the mess you made of Simulated patient, per MOS:BOLD? See the close I did at the CFD for this category. I know it's not an ideal close, and I'm not altogether happy with it. I considered a re-listing with an updated status, but I think the close will allow you to proceed (if you wish to do so) with the least amount of confusion about what exactly is going on. Hi, I've begun removing a few from the category. A lot of remaining are OK but you might want to remove any more you disagree with. BTW as a film buff you might be interested in my User:Dr. Blofeld/Great films list. It's nowhere near the level it should be but overtime I hope to see most of the truly great world cinema films missing from it and probably remove some of the lesser greater films from it!
