Your user page

I made a small change to your userpage. It was showing up in the category Chemistry pages needing pictures. I think it is now the way that you intended it to be, but if not please just revert my change. --Ed (Edgar181) 14:22, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Re: Sorry About That

Re your message: No worries. That vandal was going so fast blanking sections that it was hard to keep up. With several of us reverting things, occasionally we get tangled up. No worries. =) Thanks for helping out. -- Gogo Dodo 02:16, 18 March 2007 (UTC)

Chemical images

Shoyrudude555 thanks for making and uploading the chemical images that I recently requested. Also, I've not hunted around for the policy on this, but I think it is to avoid pixilation of the image, people tend to upload much larger images than you currently are (e.g. see 1,2,4-Trichlorobenzene). If you get a chance can you re-uplaod your images accordingly -- many thanks Quantockgoblin 13:45, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Alkoxide is shown incorrectly

Alkoxides are not unusually simple ions and never monomeric. Please take steps to read about their structural chemistry otherwise you are misleading readers. It is common error (mine too) to assume that ions adopt monomeric structures.--Smokefoot 13:50, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

thanks for the note. I agree that its maybe best to oversimplify alkoxide for the functional group article. Best wishes.--Smokefoot 22:28, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
shoy - You asked me to raise any problems with structures that I've seen, on your talk page. I believe that the Methoxy drawing would be more chemically correct if it was drawn bent (e.g. see methanol image). Oxygen like carbon is sp3 hybridized and thus tetrahedral, two bonds and two lone pairs which togther form a tetrahedral structure. Please also see my note above. Best regards -- Quantockgoblin 01:37, 24 March 2007 (UTC)

Hello. I'm in agreement with the recent revert you made on Jeopardy!. Not sure if you already know about them, but you might find Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace useful. After a revert, these can be placed on the user's talk page to let them know you considered their edit was inappropriate, and also direct new users towards the sandbox. They can also be used to give a stern warning to a vandal when they've been previously warned. Best regards, WǐkǐɧérṃǐťTalk to me or learn something new! 01:48, 1 May 2007 (UTC)

Cacodyl oxide

Hi Shoy.

Just a minute ago, you added this image to cacodyl oxide.

As far as I've been able to determine, the correct structure of cacodyl oxide is Me2As−O−AsMe2, not MeC(=O)As−O−AsC(=O)Me as your image shows.

Where did you find your structure? I found mine here.

I don't know which of us is right, but one of us isn't!

Redundant images for deletion

I have deleted a number of your images that you have tagged for deletion with WP:CSD#I1 - Redundant images. Please note that the criteria for deletion as a redundant image requires that "This image is a redundant (all pixels the same or scaled down) copy of other image, in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not Commons), and all inward links have been updated." Because these images became redundant becuase of improved versions of the images in a different file format, I have deleted them under category WP:CSD#G7 - author/uploader's request. -- Flyguy649 talk contribs 03:00, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

No problems (sorry my note was rather dry). I figured as much, which is why I let you know! Cheers! -- Flyguy649 talk contribs 03:07, 27 September 2007 (UTC)

I have also been deleting a number of the images, as you requested. Are you sure you want Image:Propyl groups.png deleted? I'll defer to your judgment, as you are obviously a great contributor in this field, but this image is still currently being used in an article.--Kubigula (talk) 04:06, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Same question about Image:Xylose.png.--Kubigula (talk) 04:09, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
Xylose isn't my image. ;p Anyways, I'm at work so I can't check commons right now (it gets blocked as "Personal Pages", go figure that one out), but I believe a better (non-texted) version of Image:Propyl groups.png exists at commons under the same name. There's been a big push to move images to commons and make them more universally friendly. If one of you could check commons, you'll know for sure if it can be deleted. shoy 12:23, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

business directories

Those articles were indeed totally inappropriate, and I have deleted them. Thanks for spotting them. But it is just possible that the guy who inserted them might be doing so in good faith, so I'd have left a level 3 warning, not a final warning. Ciara Durkin

Hi - thanks for the note. I'm afraid that you are mistaken. This is a major news story certainly in Massachusetts but also in her native Ireland[1] and has already received national coverage on NPR[2]. The issue isn't that she is dead - it is that she was first reported dead in combat, then reported dead in non-combat and is now reported to have been discovered with a single bullet to her head within the safety of Bagram Air Base. She also, apparently, recently warned her family to be suspicious if she was killed. Big story. You should try to hold your wee before shooting Talk Page warnings off to serious editors like you were some newbie hall monitor. Seriously. --AStanhope 17:51, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

Please pledge to exercise restraint and thoughtfulness the next time you are alarmed by the existence of an article stub. Perhaps we could get you a stopwatch and you can practice sitting still for x minutes after an article appears before acting upon it. Maybe you could take the time to enjoy a cup of coffee, take a brisk walk or have a pleasant chat with a friend? I can remember seeing a list of "Articles that have been requested for more than a year" here somewhere. Maybe your energy could be harnessed to tackle that project! Clarification on CSD:A7

Hi. :) I came across your speedy deletion tag on Something Strange About Marci (short story) and I just wanted to point out to you that {{subst:db-a7}} is specifically for people (individually or grouped) and websites. There is no consensus for speedily deleting other articles types under this criteria. As Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion/Explanations notes, other articles that fail to assert notability should go through proposed deletion or articles for deletion. Thanks for looking out for Wikipedia. :) --Moonriddengirl 21:41, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

User talk page cleanup

I reverted a move that someone did to you (moving your user page and talk page to "Douchebag101") because they were vandalizing your page. I'm not sure if I got the history restored right, and it's possible that I may have lost some things. On the other hand, it's only showing two deleted revisions (the vandalism), so maybe I got this right. --Elkman (Elkspeak) 17:29, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

John254's non-admin AfD closes

Any admin can open and then reclose a non-admin AfD closure. See Non-administrators closing discussions. In the future, please first post a note at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard asking for an admin to reclose the non-admin closed AfD. If that doesn't work, you can then post a request at WP:DRV. That way, you have two chances of having the close reversed rather than one and DRV may receive less posts. -- Jreferee t/c 16:39, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

Although I didn't make a specific request, I called attention to the AFDs in question at AN here. Note that I allowed time for discussion to occur before taking the AFDs to DRV. shoy 16:58, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

Why I'm watching

The reason I'm watching your page is because I was working on deleting inappropriate pages at Special:Newpages several days ago, and I noticed you were doing a good job at tagging pages for speedy deletion. I took more of a look at your contributions and I think you'd make a good admin. (As another example, this DRV request for a non-admin closed AFD was appropriate.) I think we could always use more admins who are willing to delete some of the dreck that shows up at Special:Newpages. What do you think? --Elkman (Elkspeak) 19:53, 27 October 2007 (UTC)

Oh, maybe someday. I'm afraid I'd just crash and burn at RFA right now, though. shoy 01:40, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Why does every chemistry page need an image? What image?

Hi. On the page Talk:Hydrate, a recent notice posted by a bot requests a diagram but doesn't say of what. I contacted the bot owner who says he was asked to set up the bot in a discussion initiated by you. Actually what is discussed is how to set up the bot, but not why.

I am a physical chemist and not a bot programmer, so I would like to ask you: WHY exactly does every chemistry page need an image? I note that your user page refers to organic chem, where structures are essential for large molecules. But the bot is also going to hit a lot of articles on small and/or inorganic molecules where the need is less obvious. For the article on Hydrate I have no idea for what substance a structure is wanted, so I thought instead of making the article more interesting by adding pictures (not structures) of anhydrous and hydrated CoCl2 where the color change is used to detect moisture. Dirac66 02:54, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

I believe that images are a useful tool to help the reader understand the subject matter.
As for inorganic vs. organic, take a look at sodium chloride, where there's a great crystal structure. (The line between structures and pictures starts to get blurry here.) Putting pictures of pink and blue cobalt chloride on the Hydrate page sounds like a great idea. That's the intent of tagging these articles, to identify and get people thinking. And if you feel an article doesn't need a picture, remove the tag. You won't hurt my feelings, and you certainly won't be hurting the bot's. shoy (words words) 12:40, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

OK, with your encouragement I have added pictures of the two forms of CoCl2 to the Hydrate article. Have a look. (The hexahydrate is actually magenta - the pink I remembered must have been quite dilute). Dirac66 03:12, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Speedy deletion tagging

Hi Shoy, thanks for tagging (correctly) several different articles for speedy deletions. When you do this, may I suggest that you leave a message on the author's talk page telling them about the speedy deletion of their page, so that they know why their page has been deleted ? A proposed text is always suggested by the speedy deletion templates. Thanks, Schutz 23:31, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

Oh, I see you've been adding some warnings. Don't hesitate to add more of them, then :-) Schutz 23:49, 2 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi I'm totally confused

How exactly do I add a picture to my userpage? Don't assume I have a graduate degree in C++, please respond in English, or refer me to a page in English which answers this question. Every time I try to upload a picture - taken by me - it gets deleted. Thank you for your consideration. I am not a stupid person, I hold a doctorate, just not in computer science.  :) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Canalboat (talkcontribs) 00:01, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

Well, as far as I can tell, your images keep getting deleted because they're just resized copies of a picture you've already uploaded-- Image:Picture_of_canal_in_Holland.jpg, which doesn't look like it's going anywhere. Note that to show pictures of different sizes on Wikipedia, you don't have to upload different sized images; all it takes is just some simple wiki-formatting. I'm going to point you to Wikipedia:Extended_image_syntax, which is all about how to make image work, and Wikipedia:WikiProject_User_Page_Help/Do-It-Yourself/Formatting_Pictures, which contains a nice little tutorial. Hope this helps, shoy (words words) 00:07, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
Appreciate the help. I just uploaded a completely different picture, following your guidelines, and nothing appears on my page. Should I just wait a while? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Canalboat (talkcontribs) 00:24, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
Well, looks like you accidentally created a page in mainspace instead of uploading an image again. (Though it is a pretty picture.) I gave you an example of how to put an image on your user page, I hope you don't mind.
Also, remember to sign your talk page posts using ~~~~, it makes things easier to follow. shoy (words words) 00:28, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

Your "example" of how to upload picture on my userpage is unintelligible to me. It just says, "try this", but when I click on the link I just get routed to your page. I can't figure out how to make four tildas either, so just call me Canalboat. Hey don't get impatient, I really AM trying, but all this is a mystery to me. Your comment on Mac OS X pricing

Thanks for you comment, however I have reviewed all relevant policies. Further OS X is significantly different than the iPhone, which is a niche product and is only available in limited markets. It is an operating system with many markets (worldwide actually) and thus it requires a detailed article to cover this aspect of the product appropriately.

It is no different than Windows Vista editions and pricing article on Wikipedia. I did not spend a few hours of my time to make an article that is not relevant and in compliance. Cheers. Nja247 (talkcontribs) 00:22, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

I doubt seriously that Windows Vista editions and pricing would survive an AFD unscathed, and I'm seriously considering nominating it as well. shoy (words words) 00:30, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Just be consistent and do it for the Windows article as well. There you removed prices instead of doing an AfD, but I assure you it will be reverted. Thus we have unequal treatment. Nja247 (talkcontribs) 01:25, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

I didn't take it to AFD because there is still useful information in that article about versions. The Mac article consists solely of prices. shoy (words words) 03:31, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Fair enough, but would you believe that there is already a Windows Vista editions article! Either pricing needs re-added to the latter article or it needs deleted as there's now to articles dealing solely with Vista editions. Nja247 (talkcontribs) 08:50, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

It just got moved there. shoy (words words) 12:16, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for taking initiative in closing AfDs, but keep in mind that non-admins need to limit AfD closures to those that don't require any sort of admin action. In this case, the copyrighted content needed to be deleted from the page history of Telephone newspaper, which is the duty of the closing admin. You correctly saw that everyone was roughly on the same page when it came to reaching consensus, but this was one of those unusual cases. Tijuana Brass 06:05, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Copy violations have to be deleted from page histories as well? Yeah, that makes sense now that I think about it. You learn something new every day. :) shoy (words words) 12:18, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

Molestaion allegations

Hopefully, the article that this duplicates will be deleted, though that debate is still in progress. By closing a debate without taking any action on this copy, you left a live wire open for someone to get hurt on. I've gone ahead and blanked the page, but I think you should finish the job. GroupSwim Deletion

Hello Shoy, I've rewritten the GroupSwim entry to be consistent with other company write ups on Wikipedia, including our competition. Please let me know if I need to anything else and what the process is to make this available on Wikipedia. Thanks for your help.

The oxygen atom is insufficient in the Image:D-Mannosamine.PNG. --Akane700 (talk) 22:58, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

What do you mean by "insufficient"? shoy (words words) 13:41, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Afd's

Were they all from November 18 or some of the afds are on other dates? If so can you please give those links if there are still some are missing? Thanks!. Seems that everything made onto that date are already closed and deleted (well at least the articles that were linked from those afds that I've closed. If not, I may catch them while I cycle through November 19 and 20 (or 21)--JForget 02:11, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Ancient Mialoa, Prehistoric Mialoa, and Modern Mialoa didn't have individual AFDs. (Neither did three of the ones under Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Sczoloa, but you already took care of those.) These are the last ones, I promise. shoy (words words) 02:16, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

Yuckfoo

Shoy, I think you should close your RFC on Yuckfoo's username. Yuckfoo has NOT made any edits since I brought up the user name. His [last edit was on the 23rd 20 minutes before I posted on his talk page. He is an established editor with a solid track record and thus, IMHO, deserves the right to respond first. He's probably on Thanksgiving vacation. I would suggest closing the RFC, letting him respond, then depending on what he does reopen it. As it is, nobody is going to force him to change until he returns anyways.Balloonman (talk) 19:10, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

  • Apologies on the dates, I ran across the name browsing through some AFDs by date, and I must have gotten confused somehow. I was hasty. But the issue still stands; Fred raised the same concerns two months ago, and I can't find any on-wiki communication to suggest that the problem has been resolved. I see your concern though, and suggest that the username not be blocked until the user in question returns. shoy (words words) 20:18, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
    • NP... thanks for withdrawing the nom. I suspect that in the absence of Yuck, that the RFC would have failed... it's hard to take action against an established editor when the editor is not available. I'm hoping that he will change it on his own.Balloonman (talk) 05:29, 27 November 2007 (UTC)

GM1 Ganglioside

Shoyu, your structure of the GM1 Ganglioside has the sialic acid bound by an ether bond to the #9 carbon. In fact, the sialic acid is bound by an alpha-anomeric glycosidic bond from the #2 carbon. This was located when searching the Guillian-Barre syndrome.

Also, the structure of D-mannosamine is not correct, it is simply 2-deoxy-2-amino mannose, so if you show this compound it needs to have the correct empimers whether in the ring or open chain form.

Your structure of phenyl galactoside does not show the anomeric configuration.

RE: Methamphetamines.PNG

I found a error with the image Methamphetamines.PNG you uploaded with the account Shoyrudude555. For "MDA" the molecule shown is 4,5-methylenedioxyamphetamine (like MMDA without the third methoxy) when it should be 3,4-methylenedioxyamphetamine. I'm sure it was a simple mistake, but if not see; Wikipedia: MDA or Erowid: MDA--Astavats 05:20, 4 December 2007 (UTC)

HI Shoy - this is mneuville - I actually work for the American Public Transportation Association and I was trying to edit the page with just the associations basic info and take out the awards info that is not correct. How do I get this to not be copywrited? Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mneuville (talkcontribs) 22:15, 4 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi, I noticed an error in your image. The hydroxyl groups of the left ribose should face upwards. Greets, --NEUROtiker (talk) 10:31, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

You mean they should be coming out of the page instead of going into it? shoy 06:21, 13 January 2008 (UTC)
Yes, exactly, because the left ribose is flipped over compared to the right one. --NEUROtiker (talk) 11:29, 13 January 2008 (UTC)

Strontium Iodide

On strontium iodide I have changed the chembox to chembox new. A question- how did you link via google books for the solublity/melting point data- all I get is just the book details but no visibility of the pages. Cheers. Axiosaurus (talk) 10:04, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

Interesting! must be some regional filter that google put on. Similar thing with wiley, In UK we get free access to some wiley encyclopedias (older editions only) but when I put links on a SE Asia based guy added "subscription only" as they have apparently have to pay.Axiosaurus (talk) 13:02, 17 January 2008 (UTC)

Selma Blair

The block was for edits like this one, which involved blanking much of the page, not just for the US Weekly item. Frankly, I wouldn't care if that little tidbit were removed -- feel free if you don't think the sourcing is good enough. Also, the part about the user being "Ms. Blair's personal representative" sounds fishy. Finally, it's only a 24 hour block. Thanks, NawlinWiki (talk) 20:04, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

Good job on posting the articles requested for more than a year page onto the relevant projects! I just thought of the idea now and started posting it to a few projects before I saw you bet me to it 3-4 months in advance :). Gold(III) iodide

Hi Shoy,

I see gold(III) iodide on your to-do list. Apparently, it doesn't exist - see WebElements.

Speedy Deletion of Jonathan Cohler

Your vigilance on copyright violations is very much appreciated. However, you recently tagged Jonathan Cohler for speedy deletion as a copyright violation of http://jonathancohler.com/cohlerbio.php. While it is a cut and paste article, it is not a copyright violation as that page is not only not copyrighted, but it specifically states it is released under GFDL. It's obscure (literally in the fine print), and I wouldn't have noticed it either until I saw the talk page. I actually deleted the article and restored it when I realized the source was released. plutonium(III) fluoride

The structure references I have indicate that this has the LaF3, Tysonite structure, usually described as tricapped trigonal prismatic but could also be described as 11 coordinate, rather than the UCl3 structure which also has a form of tricapped trigonal coordination.Axiosaurus (talk) 11:11, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

Your colestipol entry

Your structure, IUPAC name and CAS number are all incorrect for your "colestipol" entry.

The correct CAS nnumber is 50925-79-6. —Preceding unsigned comment added by RandyHF (talkcontribs) 18:39, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

PubChem seems to agree with the molecular structure given. Do you have any sources to back up your assertion? shoy (reactions) 19:18, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

Pubchem also has it wrong. I'm not sure what you have access too, but Chemical Abstracts lists it correctly. You can also access a pdf from Pfizer who sells it under the brand name Colestid, and they give the chemical identity in the first paragraph:

http://media.pfizer.com/files/products/uspi_colestid.pdf

It correctly is: a copolymer of diethylenetriamine and 1-chloro-2, 3-epoxypropaneRandyHF (talk) 19:33, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

So are you thinking to fix it, or should I post the correct description to the colestipol site?RandyHF (talk) 21:55, 3 March 2009 (UTC)
