New Pages update
Hey Tom Morris/Archive 10 :). A quick update on how things are going with the New Page Triage/New Pages Feed project. As the enwiki page notes, the project is divided into two chunks: the "list view" (essentially an updated version of Special:NewPages) and the "article view", a view you'll be presented with when you open up individual articles that contains a toolbar with lots of options to interact with the page - patrolling it, adding maintenance tags, nominating it for deletion, so on.
On the list view front, we're pretty much done! We tried deploying it to enwiki, in line with our Engagement Strategy on Wednesday, but ran into bugs and had to reschedule - the same happened on Thursday :(. We've queued a new deployment for Monday PST, and hopefully that one will go better. If it does, the software will be ready to play around with and test by the following week! :).
On the article view front, the developers are doing some fantastic work designing the toolbar, which we're calling the "curation bar"; you can see a mockup here. A stripped-down version of this should be ready to deploy fairly soon after the list view is; I'm afraid I don't have precise dates yet. When I have more info, or can unleash everyone to test the list view, I'll let you know :). As always, any questions to the talkpage for the project or mine. Thanks! New Page Triage prototype released

Biochemic cell salts
Hi. I was a bit disappointed with the debate at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Biochemic cell salts. I noticed that you wrote "Show that there are independent, reliable sources on the topic that come from non-fringe non-lunatics and I'll happily change my mind". I provided the information that Edzard Ernst had written critical articles, which presumably met your needs, but you didn't show any sign of changing your mind and the deletion juggernaut rolled on. It's not that I care much about Biochemic cell salts, but more the way in which a relevant contribution to the discussion was just ignored. SamuelTheGhost (talk) 21:34, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
- That's not how I saw it. WP:GNG requires multiple independent reliable sources. Even with Ernst, I'm still not quite seeing enough to meet the 'multiple' bit of that. —Tom Morris (talk) 14:11, 16 May 2012 (UTC)
- WP:GNG says "Multiple sources are generally expected", not "required". In fact the German wikipedia article has another independent reference, to a study by Stiftung Warentest, again with a negative appraisal, but unfortunately not on line. WP:GNG explicitly says "Sources are not required to be available online, and they are not required to be in English", so that should be sufficient. SamuelTheGhost (talk) 15:34, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

New Page Triage/New Pages Feed
Hey all :). A notification that the prototype for the New Pages Feed is now live on enwiki! We had to briefly take it down after an unfortunate bug started showing up, but it's now live and we will continue developing it on-site.
The page can be found at Special:NewPagesFeed. Please, please, please test it and tell us what you think! Note that as a prototype it will inevitably have bugs - if you find one not already mentioned at the talkpage, bring it up and I'm happy to carry it through to the devs. The same is true of any additions you can think of to the software, or any questions you might have - let me know and I'll respond.

Hi Tom - you recently gave me some advice on my talk page. Critical advice, but I believe it was appropriate and well intentioned. I'd like to ask you to consider the post I just made on the Astrology talk page. I'm aware that last year almost all the contributing editors to the Astrology page were driven out by an exhaustive process of edit conflicts and obstruction, and don't want to see the situation being created where only editors who show clear hostility towards the subject are allowed to make contributions to the main Astrology page. -- Zac Δ talk! 18:35, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

Hello Tom Morris, I recently found the list WP:REX where it seems some nice volunteers like you help locate some not-so-easy-to-find references. I have tried my usual supplier of JSTOR articles but could not get these:

Themodernizer deleting files
I just noticed your request on Themodernizer's talk page after he removed yet another file from an article without explanation. I saw his rather "unhelpful" response,[1]which raises a red flag for me. I've reverted a number of edits that he has made over past few days so we don't lose those files too and asked him again why he's removing images without any explanation why.[2] Given that he hasn't edited for the past three years, the recent actions seem very strange. --AussieLegend (talk) 04:01, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
Puzzled
I am very puzzled by your ruling in the Arthur Kemp article deletion page. It is blindingly obvious that he meets none of the notability criteria. It is not even a matter of dispute that he is non-notable--all of the multi-user accounts admitted as much. Why have you ruled "no consensus"? I am absolutely baffled. - I believe I made myself clear in my closing. I ruled that there was no consensus because there was no consensus on whether or not the subject meets WP:GNG. You seemed to repeatedly avoid answering the question of whether he meets WP:GNG. The current interpretation of Wikipedia policy seems to be that either one must meet GNG or SNG or both. There was consensus that he did not meet SNG, but there was no consensus on the issue of GNG. Once you exclude all the single-purpose accounts, there isn't adequate consensus on GNG, and thus no consensus to delete. —Tom Morris (talk) 18:04, 25 May 2012 (UTC)
- With all due respect, it is obvious that he does not meet WP:GNG. It was clearly established that he does not meet the notability criteria for a journalist, author, politician or single-event player, so how on earth could he meet WP:GNG? It is a non sequitur to claim that there is no consensus on notability when it was clearly established that he fufills none of the notability criteria. Even now, the article still claims that he is a "writer" and a "politician" (his occupation is listed as "political activist"!) even though he does not meet the criteria for notability.

... well, okay, not just you, but you and all the other Feedback Dashboard responders you know :) My colleagues are running an experiment on MoodBar/Feedback Dashboard, testing to see the effect that receiving feedback has on newbie editing activity. They need to temporarily clear the FD queue or get as close as possible to clearing it by June 19th, in order to get a statistically significant sample. More details are here on Meta. Help needed to clear the Feedback Dashboard queue
Hi Tom Morris, a project has been constructed and Maryana (WMF) was wondering if you'd be able to help out with a research project her colleagues are running on the effects of MoodBar/Feedback Dashboard. They're trying to see if getting a response to MoodBar feedback helps newbies edit more – but to do that, they need to (temporarily) raise the level of responses to as close to 100% as possible. (Don't worry; it's only a week-long test.) If you could help me and her spread the word among the other FD top responders you know to help us clear the backlog by June 19th, that would be awesome! The Tea Leaf - Issue Four
Hi! Welcome to the fourth issue of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter for the Teahouse!
- Teahouse pilot wraps up after 13 weeks After being piloted on English Wikipedia starting in February, the Teahouse wrapped up its pilot period on May 27, 2012. We expect this is just the beginning for the Teahouse and hope the project will continue to grow in the months to come!

- What you've all been waiting for: Teahouse Pilot Report is released! We look forward to your feedback on the methodology and outcomes of this pilot project.
- ....and if a pilot report wasn't enough, the Teahouse Pilot Metrics Report is out too! Dive into the numbers and survey results to learn about the impact the Teahouse has made on English Wikipedia.
- Teahouse shows positive impact on new editor retention and engagement
- 409 new editors participated during the entire pilot period, with about 40 new editors participating in the Teahouse per week.
- Two weeks after participating, 33% of Teahouse guests are still active on Wikipedia, as opposed to 11% of a similar control group.
- New editors who participated in the Teahouse edit 10x the number of articles, make 7x more global edits, and 2x as much of their content survives on Wikipedia compared to the control group.
- Women participate in the Teahouse 28% of Teahouse participants were women, up from 9% of editors on Wikipedia in general, good news for this project which aimed to have impact on the gender gap too - but still lots to be done here!
- New opportunities await for the Teahouse in phase two as the Teahouse team and Wikipedia community examine ways to improve, scale, and sustain the project. Opportunities for future work include:
- Automating or semi-automating systems such as invites, metrics and archiving
- Experimenting with more ways for new editors to discover the Teahouse
- Building out the social and peer-to-peer aspects further, including exploring ways to make answering questions easier, creating more ways for new editors to help each other and for all participants to acknowledge each other's efforts
- Growing volunteer capacity, continuing to transfer Teahouse administration tasks to volunteers whenever possible, and looking for new ways to make maintenance and participation easier for everyone.

Feedback Dashboard update
Hello, Tom. New feedback should slow down and then stop in the next couple of days – the researchers temporarily turned off the MoodBar for people registering right now, in order to get a control sample for their test – so you'll have time to catch up. It will be turned on again on the 29th. I just hope you don't get too bored next week without feedback! Maybe visit the Teahouse?

Hi. I wonder if you would like to reconsider this block. Wandered into it by accident, and if you look at the edit pattern, it is blindingly clear that this user is someone who is genuinely trying to improve Wikipedia (albeit primarily in one article whose name coincides with his or her username). And, OK, he or she did not competely statisfy all the cpermission requirements for some pictures uploaded. But really, come on, this is not real conflict of interest territory: it's the scouts/guides ffs. Also, where are the warnings that a block was imminent? Mcewan (talk) 19:15, 20 June 2012 (UTC)

- I probably did go over the top on that block, yes. Usually I don't go anywhere near WP:UAA as there are admins who handle it.
