Wiki-Archives: Waiting to be translated: Diffulties between U.S./CAN and EU-LAW and Rights[edit]

The Eli Lilly Zyprexa saga,a criminal conspiracy from the get-go. Eli Lilly has made $69 billion on Zyprexa and it was way oversold and caused diabetes and in some cases sudden death. Lilly’s (NOW up to $4.6 billion) Zyprexa setllement payout is being stonewalled. Eight Lilly employees who are supposed ‘whistleblowers’ are getting $ 10 million each the real victims like me are being ignored. I am a living example of Zyprexa gone/done wrong was given it 1996-2000 off-label for PTSD got sudden high blood sugar A1C 14.7 in January 2000.The stuff was worthless for my condition PTSD and cost me thousands in co-pays gave me diabetes. –Daniel Haszard FMI http://www.zyprexa-victims.com

A certain user 67.82.232.151 has a clear bias against the Eli Lilly Corporation, and has single-handedly created the current 'Legal' section. Since one guy with a grudge has had such a huge effect on this page, I’m adding a POV tag. I know nothing about the industry myself, but until someone can verify this information we should let people know what’s what.

Here are some of his edits to the Eli Lilly page:

Eli Lilly has been known to engage in withholding internal information on medications, including Prozac, Thimerosal and Zyprexa in order to downplay side effects and adverse reactions in order to boost profits. [1]

Consequently, many critics claim that the FDA approval of duloxetine for Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and diabetic neuropathy is irresponsible and intellectually dishonest, and is a case illustration of the agency's failure to prevent harmful drugs from being marketed in the name of big profits. [2]

In one of the only three cases to ever go to trial for SSRI indication in suicide, Eli Lilly was caught corrupting the judicial process by making a deal with the plaintiff's attorney to throw the case, in part by not disclosing damaging evidence to the jury. [3]

Over the last decade, the company spent millions of dollars lobbying Congress in hopes of extending its patent on Prozac and some lawmakers even attempted to insert last-minute provisions to omnibus spending bills to grant the company’s wish. Generic drugmakers prevailed, handing Eli Lilly one of its few legislative losses in recent memory. The company, which favors Republicans over Democrats with its contributions… [4]

This same user also started the ‘Controversy’ statement on the Duloxetine page, containing the following outsourced and obviously biased statements:

In the 1980s, [Eli] Lilly waged a successful campaign to get fluoxetine, brand name Prozac, through the FDA even though not a single study submitted to the agency showed the drug to be effective for depression when taken alone. …not only targets serotonin, it also impacts another important neurochemical, norepinephrine. This flatly contradicts the ‘serotonin/good, norepinephrine/bad’ story that launched the SSRI revolution that [Eli] Lilly started with fluoxetine. [5]

He started a ‘Legal’ section on the Olanzapine page with this:

…documents given to The Times by a lawyer representing mentally ill patients, show that [Eli] Lilly executives kept important information from doctors about Zyprexa’s links to obesity and its tendency to raise blood sugar — both known risk factors for diabetes. [6]

He adds this unsourced statement to the SSRI Discontinuation Syndrome page:

Data obtained from 9 clinical trials assessing the efficacy and safety of duloxetine in the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) by Lilly Research found that patients with discontinuation-emergent adverse events (DEAEs) were reported by 44.3% of duloxetine patients… No follow up was published by [Eli] Lilly stating the duration of DEAE's longer than one week ultimately persisted for. [7]

Neither section you tagged here as "totally disputed" was not completely written by user 67.82.232.151. Looking at the history shows the writing of those sections has been a collaberative effort. user 67.82.232.151 hasn't edited this article for over two months, many changes have been made since then. The sections are heavily referenced and that one former author's edits to other articles are not relivant to gauging its factual accuracy. I'm removing the "totally disputed" templates from those sections because their factual accuracy is not disputed. Neitherday 12:05, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Translating 2 German- Whistleblower removed from job for talking to the press[edit]

A whistleblower who uncovered evidence that major drug companies sought to influence government officials has been removed from his job and placed on administrative leave.

Allen Jones, an investigator at the Pennsylvania Office of the Inspector General (OIG), was escorted out of his workplace on 28 April and told “not to appear on OIG property” after OIG officials accused him of talking to the press. Reports of Mr Jones's findings were widely reported in the New York Times, BMJ (7 February, p 306), and elsewhere.

His findings showed that the pharmaceutical company Janssen had paid honorariums to key state officials who held influence over the drugs prescribed in …

Effectiveness and Cost of Olanzapine and Haloperidol in the Treatment of Schizophrenia). Eli Lilly, Zyprexa and the Bush family).

Translating 2 German - Effectiveness and Cost of Olanzapine and Haloperidol in the Treatment of Schizophrenia[edit]

Context Although olanzapine has been widely adopted as a treatment of choice for schizophrenia, its long-term effectiveness and costs have not been evaluated in a controlled trial in comparison with a standard antipsychotic drug.

Objective To evaluate the effectiveness and cost impact of olanzapine compared with haloperidol in the treatment of schizophrenia.

Design and Setting Double-blind, randomized controlled trial with randomization conducted between June 1998 and June 2000 at 17 US Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers.

Participants Three hundred nine patients with a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, serious symptoms, and serious dysfunction for the previous 2 years. Fifty-nine percent fully completed and 36% partially completed follow-up assessments.

Interventions Patients were randomly assigned to receive flexibly dosed olanzapine, 5 to 20 mg/d, with prophylactic benztropine, 1 to 4 mg/d (n = 159); or haloperidol, 5 to 20 mg/d (n = 150), for 12 months.

Main Outcome Measures Standardized measures of symptoms, quality of life, neurocognitive status, and adverse effects of medication. Veterans Affairs administrative data and interviews concerning non-VA service use were used to estimate costs from the perspective of the VA health care system and society as a whole (ie, consumption of all resources on behalf of these patients).

Results There were no significant differences between groups in study retention; positive, negative, or total symptoms of schizophrenia; quality of life; or extrapyramidal symptoms. Olanzapine was associated with reduced akathisia in the intention-to-treat analysis (P<.001) and with lower symptoms of tardive dyskinesia in a secondary analysis including only observations during blinded treatment with study drug. Small but significant advantages were also observed on measures of memory and motor function. Olanzapine was also associated with more frequent reports of weight gain and significantly greater VA costs, ranging from $3000 to $9000 annually. Differences in societal costs were somewhat smaller and were not significant.

Conclusion Olanzapine does not demonstrate advantages compared with haloperidol (in combination with prophylactic benztropine) in compliance, symptoms, extrapyramidal symptoms, or overall quality of life, and its benefits in reducing akathisia and improving cognition must be balanced with the problems of weight gain and higher cost.

5.2 Suicide The possibility of a suicide attempt is inherent in schizophrenia and in bipolar I disorder, and close supervision of high-risk patients should accompany drug therapy. Prescriptions for olanzapine should be written for the smallest quantity of tablets consistent with good patient management, in order to reduce the risk of overdose.

Translating 2 English - Ritalin: Die gefährlichste Droge der Welt[edit]

Ritalin: Die gefährlichste Droge der Welt

Samstag, 9. Juni 2012

The FDA's Pediatric Advisory Committee is examining the safety of Ritalin (Generic: Methylphenidate which contains the active ingredient methylphenidate. Reported psychiatric side effects of the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder drug include suicidal thoughts, aggression, psychotic behavior and hallucinations. The FDA plans to add a new warning to the label of Ritalin emphasizing the seriousness of these psychiatric side effects. Ritalin is also associated with serious cardiovascular side effects including cardiac arrhythmia, tachycardia, chest pain and hypertension.

Beispiele für das Jahr 1998 sind Jarsin (2,3 Mio. Packungen), Kira (1,04 Mio. Packungen), Felis (700 Tsd.Packungen), Hyperforat (647 Tsd. Packungen), Esbericum (570 Tsd. Packungen), Remotiv (515 Tsd. Packungen), Neuroplant 300 (373 Tsds. Packungen), Psychotonin (251 Tsd. Packungen), Hypericum Stada (195 Tsd. Packungen) u.a..

Translating 2 German - Lilly Waited Too Long to Warn About Schizophrenia Drug, Doctor Testifies[edit]

ANCHORAGE — Eli Lilly, the drug maker, could and should have warned physicians as early as 1998 about the link between Zyprexa, its best-selling schizophrenia medicine, and diabetes, an expert witness told jurors Friday in a lawsuit that claims that Zyprexa has caused many mentally ill people to develop diabetes.

Instead, Lilly hid Zyprexa’s risks from doctors to protect the drug’s sales, according to the witness, Dr. John Gueriguian. Lilly waited until 2007 to add strong warnings to Zyprexa’s label to reflect the drug’s tendency to cause severe weight gain and blood sugar changes.

Lilly put “profit over concern of the consumer,” Dr. Gueriguian said Friday near the end of four hours of testimony.

Zyprexa, a drug for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, is by far Lilly’s top-selling product, with worldwide sales of $4.8 billion last year.

The company has said it did nothing wrong and fully disclosed what it knew about Zyprexa to the Food and Drug Administration.

Dr. Gueriguian is testifying on behalf of the State of Alaska, which has sued Lilly to recover its costs for treating Medicaid patients who developed diabetes after taking Zyprexa. The trial is being heard in state court in downtown Anchorage before a jury of seven women and five men.

Dr. Gueriguian is a specialist on diabetes and was a medical reviewer for the Food and Drug Administration for 20 years before retiring in 1998.

At the F.D.A., he recommended against the approval of Rezulin, a diabetes drug that was later withdrawn for causing severe liver damage in patients.

Under examination by Tommy Fibich, a lawyer from Houston who is representing Alaska, Dr. Gueriguian methodically reviewed about a dozen documents in which Lilly scientists and executives discussed the potential links between Zyprexa and diabetes.

Zyprexa was introduced in September 1996 and hailed as a breakthrough medicine for the treatment of schizophrenia.

But doctors quickly began to report to Lilly that patients suffered severe weight gain, high blood sugar and even diabetes after taking the drug.

By the fall of 1998, the combination of adverse-event reports, clinical trial data that showed hyperglycemia and weight gain, and problems in animal studies should have been enough for Lilly to warn doctors about Zyprexa’s links to diabetes, Dr. Gueriguian said. Instead, the company did nothing.

Documents from 1999 and 2000 also showed that Lilly was accumulating evidence of Zyprexa’s risks but not sharing it with doctors, he testified.

And in 2002, only 10 months after Lilly began selling Zyprexa in Japan, medical regulators in that country required Lilly to warn doctors against using Zyprexa in diabetic patients.

But Lilly did not issue a similar advisory to doctors in the United States. Instead, the company advised its sales representatives not to discuss diabetes with doctors unless the doctors brought it up first, according to another document presented at the trial.

“We will NOT proactively address the diabetes concerns,” the document, an internal Lilly memorandum, said.

Court recessed on Friday before lawyers for Lilly could cross-examine Dr. Gueriguian. They will have the opportunity to do so on Monday.

A lawyer for Lilly said after Dr. Gueriguian’s testimony that the company had shared all it knew with the F.D.A. and that the question of the link between Zyprexa and diabetes was still a subject of scientific debate.
