cut out background and fix skew... -- Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 15:55, 6 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

This isn't a real photograph, you know. It's a composite of textures and shading effects. Half of the rice is cloned from close by, which looks pretty awful, and the rice appears to continue through the wall of the bowl. If you cut out the background you'll be left with nothing but 2 textured swatches that are meant to represent rice, but aren't even honest photographs of actual rice. I recommend using any other photo of actual rice (there must be a few knocking about on the Commons) and nominating this one for deletion. Sorry. nagualdesign (talk) 22:41, 6 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Concur. This image doesn't really seem to illustrate anything useful or demonstrate the difference between the two types of rice. Centpacrr (talk) 22:56, 6 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I took a stab at making an alternative, since this image is used on Biryani and Thalassery biryani (and I didn't want to overwrite the original). nagualdesign (talk) 01:49, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have made them transparent PNGs. Are you sure that this work by Teona Maisuradze was released with a proper license?--Carnby (talk) 22:37, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect. Thank you. Those two letters are a reproduction from the medieval Georgian manuscripts so I don't see a problem of copyright violation here. The letter "N" was rewritten from original work which dates back to 12-14 centuries as I know. She was one of the members of the Georgian calligraphy contest as I see and most of their work was released in free license as I am aware. Jaqeli (talk) 09:28, 14 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Looks much better. Is it possible to do something about the spotty pixelation effect on the locomotive as well? -- André Kritzinger (talk) 22:48, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If you look at the full size image (1,110 × 580 px) at 100% you will see that the moiré pattern caused by having scanned a halftone original at too low a resolution all but disappears. If you have that image to rescan, try doing it at not less than 600dpi. (This one was done at 250dpi.) Centpacrr (talk) 01:17, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No, wasn't my scan. (I usually scan at 800dpi.) Thanks anyway, it looks much better than before. -- André Kritzinger (talk) 01:31, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Tweaked the tender and cab a bit to try to eliminate the moiré pattern when displayed at other than 100%. Centpacrr (talk) 03:07, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. -- André Kritzinger (talk) 11:55, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A lot of detail has been lost from the original image in an attempt to disguise the moiré pattern. In particular the joins between the boiler sections, the number "3" and the ground have become blurred. Blurring is not the appropriate way to deal with moiré, and neither is scanning at a different/lower resolution. Best practice is always to scan at the highest resolution possible (1200/2400 dpi) then use an FFT filter to remove the pattern before proceeding with any restoration. Unfortunately, there aren't many Wikigraphists who are good, or even capable, of this kind of filtering (in fact, I only know one) and I don't like to always be the one to ask them for help. nagualdesign (talk) 17:49, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

That is true and that is the reason I asked if the image could be rescanned at high resolution. As that is not possible, however, and the OP requested the removal as much as possible of the moiré pattern from the only available image (scanned at 250 dpi and displayed at 72 dpi), that is what I attempted to do which necessarily resulted in a compromise between the ablation of undesirable visual noise at the expense of the retention of some detail. Obviously neither produces an ideal result, but as no high resolution scan is available these are the two remaining options. I will leave it up to the OP to select which of the uploaded versions he prefers. Centpacrr (talk) 18:52, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Reverted - the picture is bound to turn up again someday, and in terms of detail this one will do for now. Thanks for the effort! -- André Kritzinger (talk) 21:48, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Done I've reduced the effect of the red lighting somewhat, which I think distracts from the facial features. By the way, the previous retouched version you linked to has also *warped* the face, so no wonder it looks unnatural. (Hohum @) 16:29, 28 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I had taken this photograph during a snowfall, and would like to see what can be done about making the image look less blurry, and more crisp, and make the house stand out more from the surrounding gray sky and snow. Thank you Centpacrr! As always, your efforts are much appreciated! -- Caponer (talk) 01:58, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, but I thought Centpacrr's adjustments were OTT, and the masking was sloppy, so uploaded my own edit. Feel free to disagree. Regards, nagualdesign (talk) 02:31, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry nagauldesign but your version completely ignores the essential element of the OP's request which was to "make the house stand out more from the surrounding gray sky and snow" which is what I did. The purpose of the image is to illustrate the house and more accurately reflect its real colors which were lost as the result of the highly muted lighting of the snowstorm. Centpacrr (talk) 03:38, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I think you're overstating things a tad. Let's just say we each have our own interpretation of the brief. And of the real colour of red brick, apparently. Your masking is pretty sloppy though, surely we can agree on that? I'm not sure why you get so defensive when you must know yourself how little time and effort you've spent on something. If you'd done a good job, which takes time, I could understand you being miffed, but this is not one of those occasions. And if the OP wishes to assert their opinion then so be it, there's no need for you whine vicariously. nagualdesign (talk) 04:30, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have redone the image somewhat differently while still endeavoring to fulfill the request of the OP to "make the house stand out more from the surrounding gray sky and snow". I will leave it up to Caponer to select whichever of the three versions he prefers. Centpacrr (talk) 09:37, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Better. nagualdesign (talk) 18:38, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
..And now even better. Might I suggest that there's a little bit of barrel distortion that could be removed? And it's still a little over-saturated and over-sharpened for my tastes, but I do appreciate that you've put in the time and effort, Centpacrr. Regards, nagualdesign (talk) 22:09, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The OP's request was to make the image "look less blurry, and more crisp, and make the house stand out more from the surrounding gray sky and snow" which is what I believe I did. Caponer now has the original and three altered versions to select from so let us permit him to decide which of these four images he thinks best meets his request. Should Caponer find none of these options to be a satisfactory resolution of these issues, however, I'm sure he will say so and in that event I would then take another whack at it. Centpacrr (talk) 22:30, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Centpacrr and nagualdesign, I'd like to thank you both so extremely much for your generosity of time and effort. The current version of the image is best suited to my original request--but I do like all versions created by the both of you. I'd like to leave the image as it is in its current state. Thank you again for your diligence and dedication to the Graphics Lab! -- Caponer (talk) 22:46, 1 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
