The objectives of this Honors class are to develop scientific reading, writing, and presentation skills using insect model systems for understanding development, sensory physiology and behavior. Many advances in modern medicine begin with lab research on insects such as the fruitfly Drosophila melanogaster. Here we will begin to dissect the primary scientific literature at the same time practicing the complex art of scientific communication. A significant part of the course grade will be based on improving existing Wikipedia articles on insects by adding or improving sections on their development, sensory biology (i.e., vision, olfaction, taste), and/or behavior.
