Brandon's age: 35 or 36?[edit]

The colonel is introduced to us in Ch VII as “on the wrong side of five-and thirty”. Thereafter (Ch VIII and X) he is placed in the contrast of “thirty-five and seventeen” with Marianne (though she herself has been told in Ch III to “remember that you are not seventeen”). I take thirty-five here to stand for 'mid-thirties', and place more reliance on the colonel's own late musings (Ch XLIX) on “the disproportion between thirty-six and seventeen” for an exact estimate.
