Parajanov's family name[edit]

I do not consider IMDb a reliable source for the Parajanov family's original Armenian name, which is listed in the Wikipedia article as Փարաջանյան(Parajanian). It has often been assumed that this is the case, and even Parajanov apparently thought his family's original family name was "Parajanian." But a surviving historical document (the birth certificate of Parajanov's aunt Astkhik, dating from 1888) indicates that it was instead Փարաջանյանց (Parajaniants). A photographic reproduction of the certificate can be found in: Kaleidoskop Paradzhanov: risunok, kollazh, assambliazh, ed. Zaven Sarkisian (Yerevan: Muzei Segeia Paradzhanova, 2008), p. 8.

Interestingly, the Armenian-language print of The Color of Pomegranates lists his last name as Փարաջանով (Parajanov), which is simply the Russified name transliterated back into Armenian. Also, it may not be correct to list his middle name/patronymic as Հովսեփի (Hovsepi); Иосифович (Iosifovich) is more likely. Remember that Parajanov's first language was Russian, he was educated in a Russian school in Tbilisi (Kaleidoskop, p.9), and he spoke very little Armenian by all accounts. Thus one could argue that Սարգիս Հովսեփի Փարաջանյան (Sargis Hovsepi Parajanian) is an Armenified name that has been synthesized by someone else after the fact. Parajanov vs. Paradzhanov[edit]

I see about 500 Googles for Parajanov and about 20000 for Paradzhanov. In the interests of accessibility I suggest changing the name in Wikipedia to match the generally used one. Martin Cleaver 09:03, 31 December 2006

Not from what I see. "Parajanov", besides making more sense (the sound of "dzh" is equivalent to the sound of "j"), is the more widely used of the two. 56,100 to 19,800. 21,400 to 768. 1610 to 622. However you look at it. Esn 09:00, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, If you use Google as an indicator, "Paradjanov" is by far the most common spelling--it pulls up some 200,000 search results. However, the Sergei Parajanov Museum in Yerevan uses "j" instead of "dj," so one could argue that officially, his name should be "Parajanov" in an English-language context, as it is listed in Wikipedia.Jsteffe (talk) 18:55, 15 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Parajanov in prison[edit]

Parajanov was sentenced for his homosexuality - why is this side-stepped in the article? He himself referred to this as being convicted "for raping a Communist party member" - this was hardly a setup by the authorities, as the article tries to paint. Moreover, he was again sentenced in 1982 for a year for bribery - why is this left out? Parajanov.com mentiones the second conviction in his bio, and the truth about the first one is all over the sources on the guy.

Don't denigrate Parajanov by lying about him. He was a homosexual and briber, there is nothing to be ashamed about in that.

He does not? "I am glad that the investigation was not able to accuse me of anything other than inflating my 'aberration'". This does sound like a mention of an aberration. And if you remember that Confession is heavily edited to remove lots of original Parajanov's passages about people he did not like, about his homosexuality, etc., then it's more about his heirs' position than about his own one.

And since when a factual article shoud adhere to the position of the person it describes? Parajanov was in jail for raping a man. Then for bribing an official. Perhaps people need to know that whether he, or his heirs, or his fans approve of that knowledge or not.

He didn't confess his homosexuality in Confession. So I see his position was "not to confess it", I didn't find any resource where he was negating his homosexuality. And his web site says that he was arrested for his homosexuality when he was 23. I think it should be included into the article. Steelmate (talk) 17:00, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
