Technical news

  • Editors using the mobile website on Wikipedia can opt-in to new advanced features via your settings page. This will give access to more interface links, special pages, and tools.
  • The advanced version of the edit review pages (recent changes, watchlist, and related changes) now includes two new filters. These filters are for "All contents" and "All discussions". They will filter the view to just those namespaces.

Administrators' newsletter – October 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2019).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a discussion, a new criterion for speedy category renaming was added: C2F: One eponymous article, which applies if the category contains only an eponymous article or media file, provided that the category has not otherwise been emptied shortly before the nomination. The default outcome is an upmerge to the parent categories.

Technical news

  • As previously noted, tighter password requirements for Administrators were put in place last year. Wikipedia should now alert you if your password is less than 10 characters long and thus too short.

ArbCom 2019 election voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:15, 19 November 2019 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – February 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (January 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
  • The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.

Technical news

  • Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
  • When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [1]

Arbitration

  • Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

Administrators' newsletter – March 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2020).

Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, the blocking policy was changed to state that sysops must not undo or alter CheckUser or Oversight blocks, rather than should not.
  • A request for comment confirmed that sandboxes of established but inactive editors may not be blanked due solely to inactivity.

Technical news

  • Following a discussion, Twinkle's default CSD behavior will soon change, most likely this week. After the change, Twinkle will default to "tagging mode" if there is no CSD tag present, and default to "deletion mode" if there is a CSD tag present. You will be able to always default to "deletion mode" (the current behavior) using your Twinkle preferences.

Abbas Amanat Page

Dear 4nn1l2,

Please note that this message is delivered with the utmost respect.

Is there a particular reason why you are insistent on using such a picture to represent Abbas Amanat? Consent has not been given for such usage and you are seemingly in violation of the edits not being made in good faith (please refer to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:AGF) provided the expression captured in a screenshot crop.

Did the Yale University faculty profile picture uploaded in turn not satisfy the page as well or perhaps even better? Should a Creative Commons license be obtained for the faculty photo in order for you to not take it down or request deletion?

Rather than engaging in edit wars, is there a means to which commonground can be established? After all, a Professor of History at Yale University is indeed a venerable role that must be treated with admiration.

Thank you for your consideration in addressing this matter.

Awaiting your reply.
MagusMoon (talk) 22:28, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

@MagusMoon: This is the only free picture we have of Abbas Amanat. You cannot upload non-free copyrighted pictures onto Wikimedia Commons. Please obtain a valid CC BY 4.0 license from the Yale University and then upload that picture. Please see c:COM:CONSENT for the instructions. Thanks 4nn1l2 (talk) 22:45, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
@4nn1l2: Thank you for your clarification. If there were an additional free picture of Abbas Amanat (with CC BY 4.0 license), particularly if it were a more recent one, could we use that one instead? Very much appreciate the c:COM:CONSENT instructions provided as well. Awaiting your reply. MagusMoon (talk) 22:51, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
@4nn1l2: Yes, I agree with any free picture. I only care about copyright and licences, rather than aesthetics. 4nn1l2 (talk) 23:01, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
@4nn1l2: Thank you for the clarifications provided so far. The copyright and/or license for the subject image does seem to have some legitimacy issues perhaps along with other associated complexities. While aesthetics may also not be a priority on some fronts, it should be noted that the following pages portray academics in a manner that does not appear potentially demeaning or satirical:
In fact, some other pages do not even have photos of the academics, such as the following:
If the license is called into question or is revoked, then indeed such a picture should be deleted, correct? It was earlier asked whether you were the uploader of the cropped image and it is reiterated here. As a polite request, is it possible to receive an answer? Please note that this is not a personal issue but rather to determine the source of the Creative Commons photo, which could have been uploaded by another user aside from BBC Persian and attributed to BBC Persian. It is indeed in the best interests of all parties (readers, editors, etc.) to be measured in their conduct and act with unquestionable respect and civility in line with the Wikipedia ideals to provide a balanced view and portrayal of issues covered on its pages. Could this be agreed upon? Might it be noted that your input and further insights are greatly appreciated.MagusMoon (talk) 19:24, 18 June 2020 (UTC)
I don't like it that a one-week old account lectures me about conduct and AGF and blah blah blah.
Please watch this video (File:BBC Persian - Persian Campaign.webm) and take a non-demeaning and non-satirical screenshot yourself, and then upload it to Commons. 4nn1l2 (talk) 19:37, 18 June 2020 (UTC)
@4nn1l2: Is it possible to perhaps proceed on the Abbas Amanat page without taking a subsequent screenshot, similar to how some of the other academic profiles on Wikipedia are without photos? This way would resolve any potential issues over future controversy that might arise and attention towards other Wikipedia page edits and maintenance can occur. Moreover, there would be no need to seek further involvement from other entities, such as BBC and BBC Persian. Could this please be implemented? Looking forward to resolving the matter soon, thank you! MagusMoon (talk) 20:45, 18 June 2020 (UTC)
Sorry, when we have a free picture, we use it. We try hard to provide free pictures for Wikipedia articles, and you ask us not to use the pictures we have for no good reason? 4nn1l2 (talk) 20:56, 18 June 2020 (UTC)
@4nn1l2: Following up and confirming your previous post on the image talkpage, an email requesting deletion of the image can be sent to Wikimedia. Following such deletion, no photo shall be used for subject representation on the Abbas Amanat page. Your hard efforts to provide free pictures for Wikipedia articles are appreciated, but will not occur on this profile without express written consent of Abbas Amanat. Thank you very much for your guidance and cooperation. MagusMoon (talk) 21:02, 18 June 2020 (UTC)
Sorry, you will not dictate what we do with Wikipedia articles. Wikipedia is a free encyclopaedia which can be edited by anyone. Those who have a conflict of interest should generally refrain from editing affected articles. 4nn1l2 (talk) 21:09, 18 June 2020 (UTC)
@4nn1l2: There is no dictation of rules, please do not misconstrue. In the same manner, you (collectively, given that "we" was used in terminology) are not the owners of Wikipedia and cannot likewise dictate page appearance. After all, there is a talkpage which all users can contribute to in order to resolve any potential controversy, reach commonground, and achieve a balanced entry. There is moreover no conflict of interest and it is hoped that there is no conflict of interest from your end either. Best regards, MagusMoon (talk) 21:28, 18 June 2020 (UTC)
Sure, take the discussion to the article's talk page and you will see who is speaking according to Wikipedia policies and guidelines. After all, I'm not the only user who has undone your removal of that image[2]. Accusing me of having a conflict of interest does not help your case. This is you who is probably in contact with Abbas Amanat and can have him send an email to Wikimedia[3]. My having a conflict of interest seems to be an empty accusation. I would very much like to know how you will substantiate it. 4nn1l2 (talk) 21:44, 18 June 2020 (UTC)
